When Michelle Ajamian and Brandon Jaeger looked around the stalls at local farmers markets, they had one question: Why are there no local vendors selling grains or beans?
That single question led to the founding of ๐ฆ๐ต๐ฎ๐ด๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ธ ๐ฆ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฑ & ๐ ๐ถ๐น๐น, which has been offering single-source, Ohio-grown, certified organic heirloom grains and dried beans since 2010.
Shagbark is committed to connecting regional family farmers and their products with local grocery stores, restaurants, schools, and health centers. The mill even offers rock-bottom pricing to food access sites, including schools, pantries, and food banks, so that everyone can enjoy their products.
๐ฝ The relationship with local farmers is at the heart of Shagbarkโs business model. Rather than importing crops to mill and sell, they work with regional, organic farmers to bring locally grown staples to our tables.
Their hyper-local offerings include:
๐พ Organic heirloom corn: Grits, polenta, and cornmeal
๐ซ Organic dried beans: Pinto and black beans
๐พ Organic heirloom Red Fife wheat: Flour and hot cereal
๐พ Organic spelt: Flour and hot cereal
๐ฝ Tortilla chips: Original, cornbread minis, and black bean and corn
๐ฟ Popcorn: Heirloom and organic
At ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ ๐๐ถ๐๐ ๐๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ ๐๐ผ๐น๐น๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ, weโre proud to work with the team at Shagbark Seed & Mill to bring high-quality beans and grains from field to table.
These are the kinds of foundational foods that help build a strong, resilient regional food system. Shagbark makes it possible for staples to reach family tables while keeping quality, taste, and local farmers at the center of the equation.
Weโre happy to be a bridge between Shagbark and new vendors, helping them reach new markets and smaller, family-owned locations. Weโre also proud that our distribution network has helped lower delivery costs for some of Shagbarkโs customers.
๐ฑ Organic farming is about more than whatโs left out. Itโs about whatโs built in.
Active crop rotations, no petrochemicals, no GMO seeds, and agricultural practices that build soil, support healthy ecosystems, and protect our local waterways.
And the end result? Out of this world. ๐ฝ
