My first bottle popped from a 6pk.
Lemon, flint, oyster shell, with higher acidity in a full body with a kiss of oak & the faintest hint of butterscotch for a brief second. This has good depth, structure & a finish that lasts for nearly a minute. For sub $100 this is just killer.

Hubert Lignier Les Chaffots 2017

Red fruits, with lots of intense spices, & herbs softer tannins & medium acidity in a softer + silky body. This is somewhat accessible already but will develop further complexity with bottle age. A very fine bottle. I saved the other half for tonight. A very fine bottle & a producer I really love.

Penfolds Grange is an iconic Australian wine which was first produced in 1951 as an experiment & commercially produced in 1952. It is considered to be the benchmark Australian wine & primarly made from Syrah & Cabernet Sauvignon. It comes from several vineyards over a wide area & about 7k to 9k are produced each year. This is a world class wine that has the ability to age for decades. It is definitely a wine worth seeking out.

Vega Sicilia Unico is their flagship wine & is a blend of Tempranillo & Cabernet Sauvignon from the Ribera Del Duero region of Spain. It is probably the most recognizable label from Spain. It sees 10 years or more in oak & bottke before being released & is one considered to be one of the wines with the longest aging potential on the planet. It is truly world class.

If you're going to do an Australian wine tasting, having a bottle of Grange with an Aussie style BBQ is a must.

Here are some notes on the Grange 2020 Bin 95.
Nose- Dark berries, currants, rosemary, spices, & licorice & espresso. Beautiful nose with some depth & lots of structure. Very complex.
Palate- big & bold with dark berries, espresso, licorice, spices, currants, in a full body with bigger tannins, some oak & a long finish with some graphite. This is a stellar wine that needs some time to fully unwind. There's a reason this is an iconic Australian wine. I'm betting you're all wondering if it's worth the price. That depends entirely on the individual. If you have the cash to spend, I would buy a few & cellar them for a rainy day. If not, make friends with somebody who does. Lol

Domaine De Villaine Cote Chalonnaise La Digoine 2023 Pinot Noir.
A little known secret is that Aubert de Villaine of DRC & his wife own a small Domaine in the Cote Chalonnaise that put out some great wines for the money. This wine comes from middle part of the La Digoine vineyard on the slopes of the Montagne de l’Ermitage in Bouzeron, very old vines produced a wine of unparalleled finesse and a level of class rarely seen in the reds from Chalon.
This noble red Burgundy has always drunk well above its price & it has been produced since the 1973 vintage
Vineyard: 35 - 45 years old, 1.8 ha
Soil: Clay, Limestone
Aging: Aged in wood cuves with a minimum 2/3 of the stems, depending on the vintage
Farming: Organic (certified)
Alcohol: 13.5%

I've always been a fan of this wine, but I haven't tasted it in some time since it's not availablevery often.

Sometimes Monday's call for leftovers. I grilled a flank steak last night with chimichurri & some scampi. Not an easy task since the winds were so fierce. Lol Since I had steak leftover, I decided to make a steak sandwich & drink the rest of this 100% mencia varietal by Raul Perez. This 2018 Valtuille Ultrea is drinking really well tonight as it was a tad tight last night. Tonight it has subtle red raspberry jam, spices, some savory notes & a touch of game on the nose. The tannins on the palate have softened a bit allowing for spices, juicy red & black fruits with noticeable minerals & savory notes in a full body with medium acidity & some oaky notes. At $72.99 this is a big splurge for most folks. But if you have the cash & don't mind parting with the dough, this is a good buy & definitely worth trying.
