The 2026 growing season, by the numbers 🌱

After the April 21 frost, it felt like the season hit pause for a minute. Then May came in hot, literally.

Since March 1:
12.4” rain
428 GDD

May alone:
3.5” rain
239 GDD
56.4°F average temp
93.2°F max temp

A quick reminder that vineyard season can turn around fast. One week we’re checking frost damage, the next we’re trying to keep up with shoot growth, canopy work, and disease pressure.

The weather is weathering, and we are taking notes.

Things you’ll find in a vineyard:

…and apparently little bags of Irish Spring soap because the deer have no respect for boundaries.

We’re giving this old-school deer deterrent another try as the vines push new tender growth. Farming is science, experience, problem-solving, and sometimes just standing in a vineyard saying, “Sure, let’s see if soap helps.”

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating the mothers behind the vines, our mother blocks. 🌱

In grape propagation, mother blocks are mature vineyards maintained for budwood, the canes and buds used to graft and grow new vines. One mature vine can produce over 200 viable buds, which is one of the reasons we’re able to offer such a wide range of varieties each season.

Not quite flowers and brunch, but the mother vines deserve a little love too. 🍇

We got our first real look at the vineyard after the recent frost event, and as expected… it’s a bit of a mixed bag.

Muscaris is showing the most impact so far, with an estimated 50–65% of primary shoots showing some level of damage. Everything else is either holding strong or still too early to fully assess.

The photos tell the story:
• Healthy shoots pushing through
• Questionable tissue that needs a few more days
• And some that didn’t make it

At this stage, we’re not jumping to conclusions. Secondary buds will start to push, and we’ll have a clearer picture within the next week or so.

This is the reality of early budbreak paired with temperature swings. It’s a good reminder of how much timing, variety, and site all play a role this time of year.

Spray season is almost here… and if you’ve ever wondered whether your setup is as dialed in as it could be, you’re not alone.

One of our partners is hosting a Vineyard Sprayer Optimization Workshop on May 18 in Hammondsport.

They’ll cover tank mixing, water quality, weather impacts, and calibration, with live demonstrations.

It’s one of those areas that doesn’t always get a lot of attention, but can make a big difference over the course of the season.

Earth Day 🌱

Starting with clean plant material through our work with the National Clean Plant Network and New York’s virus-testing program, and carrying it through how we manage the vineyard every day.

We’re also part of the New York Sustainable Winegrowing Program, but the real work is what you’re seeing here.

Checked the vines this morning after last night’s frost… and this is exactly why we say to give it time.

Some buds are already showing stress, others look like they might be fine. The reality is, what you’re seeing right now isn’t the full story.

Give it 24–72 hours. That’s when things really start to reveal themselves.

Spring frost can be tough on early growth, and with budbreak underway in many areas, this is one of those weeks we’re all watching closely.

Not all damage shows up right away. In many cases, it can take 24–72 hours for symptoms to fully develop, which makes patience just as important as observation.

If you’re out in the vineyard checking on things, keep an eye out for:
• darkened or blackened buds
• limp or water-soaked shoots
• collapsed or shriveled leaves
