Forrest and Finley (and Josef) graduated today to the wagon after a week on the carousel. They adapted quickly. I love telling young kids that they can learn a new language ( horse) real fast. There are only five words. Git up. Woe. Gee (turn right), Haw ( turn left) and back. Forrest and Finley learned git up and woe on the carousel. Today they seemed to get gee and haw intuitively. Of course, unlike their five year old human friends, they can’t remember the words yet. They still need a translator. In horse the translator is the bridle and bit. They will still need it for a couple of years, but they are impressive animals with how quick they took to the wagon.

We had a bad couple of years. All of our work horses died. We were left with no trainer horses. So Saturday, Josef and I started training the new Forrest and Finley. We hooked them to the wagon. What a disaster. They did not understand the simple commands ”go” and “stop.” A few broken harnesses and bruises later we hooked them to a training carousel and they are now learning to go and stop. Once those commands are learned we’ll put them back on the wagon.

Neto and Jenn have four hard working, beautiful daughters without whom I could not run the Ranch. They move pipe, fence, and tend and train animals. The oldest, Emma wrote this delightful essay about the work this year.

So after I rode Navar to Andy Griffiths’ house, with him turning and running at each passing of a car, Neto took him home while I ferried Neto’s three stead’s in Andy’s truck. Five hours later Neto and Navar returned, with Neto riding, no hands on the reigns, and a horse who ignored all the cars and trucks. “How did you do it” I marveled. “Well,” Neto said “sometimes we need to train horses”, other times we need to train riders.” Apparently I had been tensing up as cars came by, and I was transferring that to my horse. A rider who was not afraid to just ride saved the day.

Navar had never been ridden down the road. He had an unatural fear of cars. Yesterday I ride him to Neto’s house, about a mile. Neto urged me to put some miles on him so we rode back to the ranch. From there we went to papa jay’s. About three miles. It was dark then so I got to go to bed. We were up going again at 7:00 this morning. After a nights rest, Navar has forgotten all he had learned so we headed out on a four hour trek. At the end I was seriously sore and the horse, while doing better still needed more. Needless to say I am a bit sore tonight. By the way Neto was not content to ride only one horse so he took three!

This is Junior. We bred raised and trained his moma, then we bred raised and trained him. He is a third generation here at the ranch. He is well trained, but had never been packed. Here he is on his first trail, following along, through water even, without even a rope! Experienced packers were amazed. Good breeding and careful training make a horse. They even surprise us, their trainers.

I took Navar to a horse show today. I was glad to see Freeman Yoder there.
