More thunderstorms last night, one about 11:00 pm and another about 6:00 am. About 1.5 inches of rain and it caused some gullies in the road and put some water in the stock tank. BUT the interesting part was this morning I saw a Great Blue Heron standing in the tank. Two points: It's been 10-15 years since I have seen one on the ranch & it was BIG...largest I have ever seen anywhere. Amazing. It took flight as soon as I rolled up on Ray's Ridge well above it so I had a great view as it gained air. NOT my photo but exactly what I saw....

Pool is open. During Memorial Day weekend we began clearing out a nice stand (14-16 trees) of Live Oaks on Rattlesnake Mountain just northwest of the house by about 120 yards. Photo below. Started by taking down large dead cedar trees and dragging them behind the JD tractor to the old quarry pit burn pile. This took several days, and the pool was inviting even though the water was still cool. I opened it on Memorial Day. This weekend we began cutting the numerous live cedar trees that have grown up in past 17+ years since they were last cleared. We used both JD Gators and a trailer to haul several loads to burn pile. Fortunately weather cooperated for burning both weekends but was very humid. The pool was open for both of us for sure on June 1st and we really needed the cool down. Another day or two and we should finish up this project. But Pool is nice and ready for friends.

SPRING UPDATE: Still a lot of rain this spring. Amazing how much we have had. The Painted Buntings arrived at the first of May as usual and we have had a wide variety of wildflowers. First the Bluebonnets, then the Paintbrush, now Thistles, with a good mixture of others. The large fantail goldfish have survived another year in the wildlife tank. I believe that's 5+ years now, I didn't know they even lived that long. I need to get a few for the stock tank soon. I've repaired the squirrel guards on all the bird feeders and added one new one for a total of eight. I bet we attract another pair of Painted Buntings with the new feeder. The swimming pool was open by this time last year, but it has been cooler with all the rain this year so maybe in early June for swimming.

WOW...exciting evening. At dusk I took a Gator ride along the fence rows and as I was going between the goat pasture and home acreage I spotted a large Jaguarundi in the open goat pasture. Just as deer do he broke for the cover of the cedar thickets. It was 90+ yard run for him so I had a good view and he jumped the fence just as easy as pie. Largest I have ever seen so I suspect a male. Huge furry tail that is typical of a Jaguarundi and a solid yellow-grayish color. No spots. Amazing. THEN...later we have a tornado warning and the iPhone and telephone issued emergency instructions, Got our attention, but the storm dissipated so it was soon cancelled. A very exciting evening on the ranch.

We've had more Bluebonnets this year than ever before. All native as no one ever lived on our place before us. This area has been cleared in past two years...that new trail is less than 3 years old, shortcut from house to goat pasture.

UPDATE: We have had our first wild hogs recently. I'm on top of the mountain so a lot of rock and caliche that does not really favor hogs. But they have really wallowed and torn up the draws and any soft dirt we have along the road and trails. Not that much damage as there's not much to damage. Not a sign of them in the mountain pasture as I guess the donkey doesn't allow them over there. Still getting rain, 5" since Christmas. Tank is full. We had a bit of freezing rain first week of the year. Lost several large branches off of some really tall cedars down in what the neighbors call the feed lot. That's the lowest land with least amount of sun I have and must have had more accumulation of ice on the branches. The goats have been taking care of them. I'll clean cut them when they are finished.

Another two inches of rain after Christmas day. We have been well above normal rainfall for past five months. Needed it...tanks are full all over county.

I've been working on drainage since the recent heavy rains. I allowed one culvert under my road to actually disappear over the years and really needed it during the 10" of rain weekend. Water standing on high side and in the road itself. I found culvert by digging low end and then exposed both ends of the pipe. Unfortunately the interior of culvert pipe is blocked from end to end. Dug it out as far as shovels would go on each end and scheming on how to unblock. May be in luck as after first fair rain after digging out the pipe my new (well oversized) drainage ditch on low end was a lake...so the water came through. Next rain a few days later and a repeat. It looks as though it may clear itself. When it drys I'll work on landscaping it but still allow for oversized drainage ditch below until the culvert pipe fully clears. New tractor helps a lot.
