Mexico confirmed a new case of New World screwworm in Sabinas Hidalgo, located in the state of Nuevo León, less than 70 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.

This is now the northernmost detection of NWS during this outbreak and the one most threatening to the American cattle and livestock industry.

Currently, U.S. ports remain closed to imports of cattle, bison, and horses from Mexico.

They’ve seen good years and bad. This is one of those tough years.

Rain and extreme heat during peak flowering, along with a planthopper infestation, hurt rice yields across the region.

“It’s been a perfect storm of issues—from rain, heat, insects—combined with historically low prices and high input costs, we’re looking at a farming crisis that we haven’t seen in 40 or more years,” Tim said.

Rice prices for farmers range between $12 to $12.75 per hundredweight, far below the typical $14 to $17 range. Even with strong yields, farmers like Tim are struggling to break even.
