I mean, they probably did, tbh.

Luckily we’ve got dogs and super fences.

Every year, I’m surprised.

The lambs grow so fast. Weaning day comes. All the lambs are 60-90+ days old.

And they are ready for the world.

The mommas, on the other hand, are not ready to let them go.

In a few days, they will settle down.

In a few weeks, we’ll put the ewe lambs back with the mommas and although they will remember each other, nursing will be done.

💙💙💙

Thank you to everyone who came to the Whidbey Island Weavers Guild Spin-In this past weekend.

I just love chatting with you, talking shop and hearing your big plans.

And Dapperly had a blast.

Watching the joy he brought to so many people was a highlight for me too.

Until next time, my friend 💙 Katie (& Daps)

The lambs are so good this year!
Weaning in mid-May. Some of the best will come with me to Black Sheep Gathering in June.

Boggles the mind.

I watch over my sheep with their lambs.

They’re peaceful. Idyllic.

They eat the grass, but love the weeds (forbs) the best.

They fertilize the ground. Extra, mixed with straw from barn days, gets composted to fertilize our gardens and orchard.

Their wool makes felted, woven, knit and crocheted textiles. When the textiles are no longer useful, they break down, releasing nutrients back into the earth.

Their meat feeds our family, friends and neighbors.

I understand not liking that last part. But it’s also part of maintaining a strong and healthy flock.

And witnessing those moments is a sacred part of what I do. Not fun. But deeply meaningful and done with care and gratitude.

Wishing you the peace of a flock of sheep on pasture. 💙

Dapperly is ridiculous.

It’s hard not to fall for a lamb that comes running whenever he hears your voice.

Ram lambs raised on a bottle—bummer lambs—can grow into dangerous big guys. They treat people like sheep. Even friendly play—like head-butting and running at you—can cause serious injury.

I avoid over-handling ram lambs and learned my lesson early to avoid rubbing their heads. Occasional chin scratches are okay, but even then, I would prefer my rams learn to keep a bit of distance from people. For their safety and mine. After all, a dangerous ram can’t stay.

That’s why I decided pretty quickly to band Dapperly. No testicles, no ram-y attitude.

Much like my heart sheep Indy—who he strongly resembles—Dapperly will be a wonderful lawn pet for a lucky family.

ISO new pastures in early summer. (Must have a friend… May I suggest his bummer lamb friend Magnetically, aka Mags?)

Do they ever stop moving?! 😂

The lambs love playing together around the big trees and zooming across the field.

Allegro was the first lamb born this year—6 weeks old now!

She (and her stunning brother Andante) inherited the family s***k. All the confidence and energy. Up in everyone’s business. And definitely not coming close enough to catch!

But their time is coming. Halter practice starts soon!

What a lambing season! High highs and low lows.

Miss A named baby E, but Minnow’s lambs + Jolene’s lambs need names!

Pop ‘em in the comments.

Only 2 rules: they must start with “D” and “F,” respectively, AND they must be adverbs.

Minnow’s an odd duck here. She’s 75% Romney, and that 25% Gotland shows up in *shine*! ———-Before I go on, you know what...

Minnow’s an odd duck here.

She’s 75% Romney, and that 25% Gotland shows up in *shine*!

———-

Before I go on, you know what to do. Pop those “D” names— adverbs only—into the comments!

———-

Named by Miss A and adored by all… even though Minnow definitely does not like us. 😜

These are her first lambs—Romeldale (Blizzard) sire—so…
50% Romeldale
37.5% Romney
12.5% Gotland

They are BEAUTIFUL ram lambs and Minnow is proving herself to be a very competent if somewhat overwhelmed mom.

Fleece is expected to be crimpy, and the shine is already shining, especially on the spotty one.

*** if you or someone you know would value one of these handsome weirdos as a ram, please DM me asap. Else, they will be wethered by the weekend! (And still available to a loving fiber flock home, please and thank you.) ***
