It's hard to know how to start this, but here we go. The processor we use for our chickens and turkeys burned down three days ago, and this late in the game, we have no alternative but to scrap the year. We can't in good conscience order birds and raise them if we have no definitive way to process them Yes, there are other processors we could use, but there are a ton of variables that don't make it feasible. Dates, capacity, and distance are just some of the factors that we took into account when making this decision.
Most importantly, the folks at Helena Farm Market are unharmed. And better yet, I spoke with them today and they've already begun rebuilding, though their timeline is still uncertain. They could be back up and running in a matter of weeks, or it could take months. The uncertainty is another factor in our decision. If we order birds, there isn’t a guarantee the processor will be able to accommodate us.
Personally, I am pretty heartbroken. I feel like I am letting my customers down and what's more, I truly love this work and I truly believe I've found my purpose and space in our local food system. I worry what taking a year off means for the business. Will our customers still be there when we come back?
But stepping back, this impacts you and other farmers just as much. Helena Farm Market served many other small farmers that had nowhere else to go, and they are three hours away. This highlights a glaring issue in our local food system security. Before Helena Farm Market, almost all of us local growers were using Central Illinois Poultry Processing. However, in the last two years they have grown exponentially and are no longer taking new customers, have imposed bird miniums and are operating at a level that doesn't allow them the time or space to serve smaller producers. Helena Farm Market was an answer to many of us. Yes, far away, but very affordable and their work is truly impeccable. If we didn't have them, there simply wouldn't be a feasible option for poultry growers in this region. And you, our customers, wouldn't have access to poultry raised locally, on small farms, by farmers you know.
In the coming weeks and months, you can expect to see me talking about this issue here, and with other farmers and food system leaders about how we can meet this processing need. For now, please know how grateful I am to all of our customers and how sad I am to take the year off.
We do still have inventory from last year that we need to sell, so be on the lookout in the next few days for information about a freezer clearout sale.
So much more to come.
