It only took us the LONGEST DAY OUT OF THE YEAR (summer solstice) to get these guys where they need to be but hey, we did it 😆 Grateful for this work and opportunity to raise food right.

Not all chickens get to act like chickens. Conventionally grown chickens are tightly packed into sheds with no grass, sunlight, or cool breezes. But these guys get to do all the things they naturally want to do like scratch the earth for bugs, flap and run around, chase flies, sunbathe, peck grass…they get to be chickens they way God intended.

What I like about using buckwheat as a living mulch:
✅ it grew so quickly other weeds didn’t have a chance to grow.
✅ it was easy to cut-even by hand.
✅ it brought pollinators to the garden.
✅ it’s putting phosphorus back into the soil.
✅ it’s putting organic matter into the soil for microbes and earthworms.
10/10 recommend

Part of our mission is to be transparent about what real food looks like and what real farming looks like. Success is not always immediate, it’s a slow build. But we are focused on doing things right and doing it right with what time and resources we have. We are getting there though!

Check out this feature about our farm and backstory. If you wonder how we afford some of our farm equipment, we seek out funding opportunities and grants!

We are looking forward to the installation of a High Tunnel (kind of like a greenhouse) this summer. We received funding for it through the NRCS (Natural Resources & Conservation Services). That baby will help us grow produce earlier and longer in the season. We can't wait!
