Yesterday Hazel presented us with 2 little does. Her labor seemed a little more difficult for her then I would have liked but she did it! When I watched her have prelabor for many hours and then push for almost 30 mins with no progress, I was a little worried. However, watching her know what to do and a little help from me, she had 2 healthy kids. When Hazel stalled in her pushing, she started to stimulate her own t***s, this helps produce oxytocin and hopefully continue with contractions. I decided to feed her some raspberry leaves to help her uterus. She was up and down adjusting kids and finally, all the sudden there was a head and 2 front legs. Shortly after, the 2nd kid came back feet first. I helped pull that one out a bit because I could tell Hazel was tired. Since the birth yesterday hazel has been working tirelessly to keep her kids up and nursing. I would even say she is too dedicated. Last night she would not sleep and would not let the kids rest. Finally after putting up a kid hut, so they could get away a little, the kids could rest and hazel did as well. Hazel’s kids did seem a little more slow to bounce up then other kids I have met, so I think hazel realized that as well. I know she had good intention at being a mama but I could tell she was a little stressed. Today, everyone seems to be doing well. I even let Hazel, Willow and all the kids have a little time together.

Hoping to have a few more kids by the end of today! Up next is our grand dam, Hazel. She has been looking uncomfortable and nesting the last 2 days. Her udder is very full. I will be surprised if we don’t have more kids by the end of today. She usually likes to let them out as soon as no one is watching. So now I will let her rest a while and come back out later to check.

Willow sure gave us some excitement yesterday! She went into labor a few days earlier then we expected. Adam and I had to take our kids to soccer practice in Duluth. I had a hunch that Willow was going to birth early but thought in the next few hours would probably not be the case. Adam hurried and put up a ring camera in the barn to ease my mind about leaving the farm. I always have a hard time leaving when it’s getting close. Sure enough we notice right when we got to soccer that Willow was acting like she was in labor. I saw a tiny push that made me nervous. Then I checked the camera a few minutes later and I knew for sure she was pushing for real. She was in labor even earlier then I had thought she would. Thankfully Joy, our wonderful farm sitter and friend, was able to meet Adam and I half way to rush me home to help. Adam had to be back in Duluth for the end of soccer practice. When Joy and I arrived home, all 3 kids were birthed and Willow was working on cleaning them up. So far everyone is healthy. The kids are still figuring out how to nurse on their own and will need some help for a bit. Willow is being a very great mama and I am so thankful to have healthy animals who don’t really need my help. However, it is so good to be there just to make sure everyone gets colostrum and stays warm for the first few hours. Thank you so much Adam and Joy for all the help getting me to the goats and taking care of them after!

After selling all but 2 goats a couple years ago, we are excited to increase our herd a bit again! This beauty, Willow, turns 4 next week and is set to kid in about 2 weeks! We are starting to count down the days.

As the snow melts, our snow packed trails get trickier to navigate, even for the ducks. However it didn’t keep them from taking the farthest adventure away from the coop that they have had all winter. During winter they don’t stray too far from the coop, food and water. They seem excited to be able to stretch their legs and forage for whatever organic matter is in the snow and find all the puddles!

After a small hiatus of soap making and almost running completely out of stock, I am starting to build up my supply again!

Safety first in the soap game! I couldn’t find my clear glasses so had to settle with my ski goggles. They probably protect my eyes better but are not the best for accurately seeing what colors the soap is.

Stay tuned for more soap to come!
