Today, I am making a batch of Lavender Lotion Bars (our most popular scent).

First, label about 100 tin. Then mix up a batch and melt.

Then filter and pour in the molds to harden.

Finally, pop them out of the molds and into the tins.

Most Loved

Whenever anyone asks which one of our products is most loved, I confidently give the answer: Sweet Lips Lip Balm.

Other than minifigure soap, it is the product we sell the most of. And it is also the product that people come up to me and tell me they love.

https://www.sweetlandmn.com/online-store/Sweet-Lips-Lip-Balm-2-Pack-p79264041

Here are the basics.
It is a lot like Burt's Bees Original
It has a light peppermint scent
We have our original and one with a bit of SPF

If you are someone who always has lip balm in their pocket/purse ect. maybe you want to give ours a try!

Blueberries in March

You probably wouldn't expect it, but March is actually a relatively busy month in the blueberry field.

I went out yesterday (Thursday) to see how the plants are doing.  At this point in the season I can look at the plants to see if there was die off over the winter. If the branches are a shade of red, they are alive.  If they are brown and brittle, the branch has died.

Last year we had a fair amount of winter die off, which led to a much smaller crop last summer.

With the extremely cold temps we had in January and the low snowfall this winter, I was anxiously waiting to find out if we were going to have a repeat of last year.

But it looks like we are in good shape at this point.* Winter kill looks mimimal or non existant in our field!  That is very exciting! 🙌

So, now we are on to the field work.  Here is what I am hoping to accomplish this March:
Prune the blueberry plants to get rid of the old branches (younger branches produce more...)
Prune low branches that hang down into the grass. It makes it hard to pick the fruit and hard to mow the grass
Dig up the top 2 (or so) rows of plants.  We have two varieties at the top of the field that don't fit in well with our production.  One ripens earlier and one ripens after our main four varieties.  And both produce small fruit.  Time to go!

It is a hopeful time of year and I am excited to get out into the blueberry field again!

*As I say every year, there is a lot that can happen between now and picking actual ripe blueberries.  But it is a hopeful sign!

Back to soap making

This late winter time is generally filled with lots of soap making.

Yesterday I made a batch of Eucalyptus Mint Goat Milk Soap.

Today, I am making Lemon Sunshine Goat Milk Soap.

While these matches will need to cure for 4 weeks before they are ready to go. I have hundreds of bars cured and ready to go in our online store (link in bio).

Ski day

We had quite the ski day today.

All 5 of us were skiing in 3 different places.

Veronica was xc skiing in the Upper Peninsula
All three kids were downhill skiing in northern MN
I went xc skiing up the north shore.

All the new snow made our day pretty awesome.

Handmade, One Stitch at a Time

Veronica's earrings have definitely been one of our best sellers since she started making them in November.

She made so many before Christmas that I thought she would take a break for a while.

But no!

She continues to make unique, beautiful designs.

Perfect?

Lately, I have been thinking about the concept of perfect.  I could go many directions with this idea, but I will focus on what we produce here at the farm.

So many things in our life are mass produced 'perfectly.' This generally means that they all look the same and are without blemish.

If that is the standard of perfect, our handmade soap, lotion, etc is not perfect.

For example. on many of our bars of goat milk soap, you can see little squiggles made by our soap cutter.  We cut our soap with guitar strings (I will have to write about this contraption again soon), and the process isn't perfect, it leaves it's mark.

On the other hand, what we make our products out of is beautiful.  For instance, our lotioin bars are made of local beeswax, organic coconut oil, unrefined shea butter and essential oils.

What are store bought lotions made of?  They may be perfectly white, but are they perfect?

I am not trying to argue that our products are perfect, but I am inviting us to dig a little deeper in how we evaluate things.

For me, this has helped me think differently about what I see in the store most often...

*Pictured is a bar of Orange Goat Milk Soap where you can see the cut marks left behind, it looks a bit like a wave...

February Blueberry Update

The super cold temps from a few weeks back had us worried that the blueberry plants were damaged.

The cold temps last year damaged our plants, which really lowered our yield.

So, I threw on some snowshoes and walked out.

What did I find?

Beautiful, blueberry plants that show little or no damage.

We still have a long road until we have ripe blueberries, but this is a good sign for a good season!

Our soaps are made with amazing ingredients like locally farmed goat milk*, organic coconut oil and all the scents used are essential oils.

*Thankfully, we don't have goats.  I get all our goat milk from goats that live within about 20 miles of the farm!
