Good morning from our farm☀️

What’s on your breakfast plate this morning?

We started our day with some of our own fresh side (seasoned perfectly with Kinder’s Honey Brown Sugar!) and farm-fresh eggs. 🍳 There’s truly no better feeling than knowing exactly where your food comes from.

*Fresh side is essentially raw, uncured bacon. It comes from the same pork belly cut as traditional bacon, but it hasn’t been salted, smoked, or cured. Think of it as a blank slate—it’s pure pork belly that you can season and cook exactly how you like. Today’s fresh side was placed on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil and cooked in the oven at 400 degrees for 15 minutes then broiled for 2 minutes. It’s not necessary to broil it but we like it a little crispy.

LET’S TALK ABOUT GOOD OL’ FASHION RESPECT

Let’s talk about what happens when someone speaks for a beef or hog then stops communicating or backs out.

When commitments aren’t followed through, or messages about confirmations go unanswered, it puts us in a difficult position. We’re left scrambling to find another buyer, trying not to leave the butcher with canceled appointments, and doing everything we can to avoid disappointing other customers who remain committed to their obligation. Let’s be real, for example there is no practical way to sell 3/4 of a steer if someone backs out of 1/4 or to sell 1/2 of steer if someone backs out of the other 1/2.

The situation becomes even more chaotic when a buyer decides to walk away after the animal has already been dropped off at the butcher. By that stage, the process is already in motion, and those costs and logistics are locked in. It’s a situation that potentially hurts the farm if a back up buyer isn’t found.

And we also don’t have unlimited freezer space to suddenly store animals that were reserved for someone else.

Raising livestock is our livelihood. We feed and care for these animals every day until it’s time for them to go to your freezer. Just like nobody expects to go to work and not get paid, we depend on buyers honoring their commitments and communicating with us.
We completely understand that life happens and situations change. All we ask for is communication and common courtesy. We work hard to be upfront and transparent about our process and pricing, and we truly appreciate customers who do the same with us.
We’ve always tried to do business the old-fashioned way — taking folks at their word and honoring commitments with a handshake. We still believe that matters.
And to most of our customers reading this — this post is not about you. We are incredibly thankful for the people who support our farm, communicate well, and honor their commitments. We simply believe in being transparent about the realities and challenges that come with raising livestock and selling direct to families. 🥩

*The last few minutes in the smoker I added a little homemade marinara sauce and topped with cheese.

Hay season is in full swing. We believe in providing the best care for our herd, which includes high-quality hay and supplemental grain to ensure they are well-fed and healthy.

Now if we could just get each herd to cooperate for a group photo 😂
