We haven’t posted in a while, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy! This little guy and 13 other friends are almost ready to go outside. They hatched out about 4 weeks ago and are now fully feathered and ready to take on the world. In about 2-3 weeks they will start laying eggs and we will reduce the males down to one or two. The adults have been laying like crazy still and need less and less supplemental light as the days get longer. We also have a batch of eggs in the incubator that will be going to a new home once hatched out.

When we find ourselves with extra eggs, I take whatever veggies we have on hand and mix it in with some scrambled eggs, bake them, and freeze them. They make great easy breakfasts and since they are frozen, they keep longer! (Though they don’t last in the freezer much longer than a week.)

How big is a quail egg? Here’s a fun size comparison of some eggs I collected tonight. The far left is a tiny egg. We have only got two of these. My guess is this one is like the first and doesn’t have a fully developed yolk. It’s still fun find though! The next two are pretty normal eggs for us, one a little smaller and one that would be considered “jumbo”. The right is a “large” (according to the carton though it seems like an average sized egg to me) chicken egg. As a general rule, 3 quail eggs equals 1 chicken egg by volume. Though quail eggs are more dense in nutrients and protein. Plus, quail eggs are way prettier than chicken eggs.

If anyone is interested in purchasing quail eggs, let us know! We have small quantities available. They are fertilized so they can be for hatching or for consumption!

Hello! Welcome to the 20 Acre Woods page. We keep Coturnix Quail as a hobby for eggs and meat. We started out with quail for a few reasons: 1) To try something different than chickens. 2) Chicken eggs make our family members stomachs upset and we wanted to see if quail eggs were gentler. (They are!) 3) Quail are quieter, take up less space, and lay more consistently than chickens. We are enjoying raising them and wanted to share our experience and maybe even help others start their own quail journey!
