Sad news - Over the weekend, we lost our beautiful agave inflorecence. We have been eagerly anticipating it's blooms to open but someone decided to cut it down. And in the process, they also mutilated the side of the large agave to get close enough to cut it. We are so sad and dissapointed in the person who did this and vandalized private property.

Happy Friday and something fun to start off your weekend - Baby birds! The baby house finches have just recently hatched above the winery office doors and the young barn owl has fledged and now watching and thinking about catching a meal.

Wishing you a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend from all of us at J. Rickards Winery.
Cheers!

It’s the Brad & Jim Show – Harvest Forecasting in Spring! Today, Brad Beard of Mercury Wine joins Jim Rickards in our Brown Barn Block Petite Sirah to take a close look at how the grape vines are doing. This year’s early spring weather combinations led to a mix of outcomes of new grape formations. Some areas are still just finishing up with bloom and a later bloom is a good thing in this case. Jim shares his expertise and experience on what is currently happening and how that may affect the fall harvest. Brad & Jim also have more to say about some upcoming fun stuff where you can join us in person. Meanwhile, please join us for this video update. Cheers!

Today at 5 PM on Facebook – It’s a brand-new Brad & Jim Show! Brad Beard of Mercury Wine joins Jim Rickards in the Brown Barn Block to take a look at how the baby grapes are developing. It’s a bit of a mixed bag as the guys forecast what the 2026 grape harvest might look like. Earlier spring weather combinations caused a bit of shatter for some vines while others are still just finishing up with bloom - and that part is a good thing. There is a lot that can happen between now and crush time but as Jim says “That’s farming for you!” Please join us for the details!

Welcome to Jim’s Journal – the May 2026 Edition! Please join Jim Rickards on another ride through the vineyards while Jim does a post-bloom checkup. It’s a beautiful day and things are looking mostly really good. The newly grafted Cab Franc is starting to push leaves and that is exciting. There are lots of healthy-looking baby grapes starting to form all around but there are a few spots where Jim is seeing shatter. Jim explains about shatter, what causes it, and how to recognize the difference between what happens with the grape flower clusters just before and after bloom. There is a delicate balance between timing of bloom and rainfall. Luckily, not all of the varieties we grow bloom at the same time! Come along for the ride and you’ll also see an up-close update on our agave inflorescence!
