Welcome to Jim's Journal - the June 2026 Edition! Jim Rickards is checking the progress in the newly grafted Cab Franc vineyard. Then next, Jim is out in his experimental vineyard where we are looking at vines that were grafted over to Negro Amaro last year. Negro Amaro is an Italian wine grape variety, known for its beautiful color and bold, black fruit flavors and Jim wanted to give it a try. So, today's video is a viticulture tutorial on how to train young grapevines into the direction you want them to go. They are growing well and now the new canes need to be trained to bilateral cordons. Jim demonstrates how this is done. Whether you are getting started with your own grapevines, appreciate how good wine grapes are grown or just really like wine, this is a fascinating process. Please join us!

Jim Rickards is checking the progress in the newly grafted Cab Franc vineyard and then next, is out in his experimental vineyard, checking out the vines that last year, were grafted over to a new variety (for us) Negro Amaro, an Italian red wine grape! These young vines are growing like weeds and need to be trained into a bilateral cordon system. Please join us at 5 pm to see how this is done. Cheers!

Today’s video are highlights from last Saturday’s Brad & Jim Show Live event, held on our tasting room patio. Hosts were Brad Beard of Mercury Wine and our Jim Rickards. It was a really delightful afternoon of wine and food pairing mixed with casual and informative conversation. There were lots of great questions from our fabulous audience and both Brad & Jim shared fun stories. Overall, it was a truly wonderful experience! Spring Barn Owl Census at J. Rickards! Today, Casey O’Connell, Senior Animal Technician from Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue is here with Jim Rickards, checking on all of our Barn Owl boxes.

Notes from Jim: What we are aiming for is to get an estimation of our owl population throughout the vineyards by looking in the owl boxes and seeing who (“hoo hoo”) is there. This year, seems to be different, at least the timing seems to be different than other years. It appears that we had two arrivals of Barn Owls to nest here. An early one and a later one. The weather in late winter and early spring was warmer than usual so I’m thinking that our overwintering pairs of owls got busy early. The early arrivals have already raised their babies and they have fledged. We recently had a fledgling barn owl hanging out in the trees outside our tasting room for a few days before it moved on. The later group that arrived are still laying eggs because four of our boxes had eggs in them.

Please join us to learn more and experience a beautiful late spring ride through the vineyards. You can learn more about Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue and the work they do here:
