Who feeds your family? A small handful of companies control almost everything sold at supermarkets. Most brands seen in stores are owned by these companies. AB InBev alone owns over 600 brands of beer. This handful of companies spent about $175 million dollars lobbying in 2020. (For the record, we spent $0.)
These companies control everything from seeds and fertilizers to what farmers grow. The focus is on producing food as cheap as possible and maximizing profits. The effects of this monopoly are far reaching. The system has been blamed for poor nutritional offerings, farmer suicides, reliance on food stamps/government assistance and exploitation of workers to name a few.
When you spend money at the supermarket, farmers see about .15 cents of every dollar you spend on produce. When you spend money at a farmers market, the farmers and producers get 100% of what you spend.
We offer a better way. Our farmers grow for quality. They grow varieties that are harder to grow because they taste better. What we sell is also picked and at our market within days instead of weeks or months. We know that fresher produce not only tastes better and lasts longer, it is more nutritious.
The people on the right of this image are not actors and these are not stock photos. These are the actual farmers and producers that feed our family and many other families in the Santa Clarita Valley. And, you can meet many of them personally at our market each Saturday.
We would also encourage you to read this great article on our food industry from The Guardian at : https://bit.ly/3hTBwHS
Please, visit any LA County certified farmers market and support our small family farms. We'd love for you to visit ours. We are open every Saturday from 8:30 until 1pm in the parking lot of the Old Town Newhall library.
