Today we worked at some tillage preparing a seed bed for planting oats. The triticale got some fertilizer too and is off to a great start! Hard to believe in about 3 weeks we will be harvesting it!

Spring is a busy time around the farm, getting so close to “pasture time” but it’s a little wet out there yet so we are holding tight a few more days. The kids have really stepped up this year helping with chores and learning to safely operate our skid loader!

Spring is for sure on its way when our days start a little earlier and end later as we do more barn checks. The first calf was born Friday evening. A little peanut out of a first time momma. Momma had it all on her own and is taking good care of it.
This one is a little special to our herd because 535 is a daughter of 112. 112 was a good ‘ol brood cow, she was culled at the ripe age of 13 years old due to not breeding back. 112 has had a total of 4 daughters, we’ve kept them all as replacements. (3 remain in the herd) She was one of those cows in her work clothes, not fancy but knew her job. You only noticed her because her calf was always at the top of the group at weaning but otherwise she wasn’t on your radar.

A few old sayings or things we heard growing up working around cattle running through our minds this morning….
~Make plans and livestock will change them.
~Only person dumber than a cow are the people raising them.
~Cows are out…..drop whatever youre, doing slide on barn boots and run!
~Cows will find the most creative ways to try to commit su***de.

Kids and I were in nice clean clothes and about ready to head to church. Nathan texts me saying “might need your help, cows are out”. We drop everything, slide on barn boots, put church shoes in the trunk hoping we could be bodies to get them all back in and still head to church. When we arrived all but one was back where they belonged…the one remaining heifer had decide to try running down between 2 tubes of baleage only making it half way before getting stuck and falling down…..
We ended up getting the loader tractor and reaching over the fence, cutting 2 bales out of the middle of a tube to get her out. We did not make it to church today but are thankful we were able to fairly easily get her out and back where she belonged! This was a 1st having an animal stuck between 2 tubes of baleage!
I didn’t take a pic while she was stuck but here’s the after!

Santa came overnight, we cared for the animals before a simple breakfast and gift opening. Merry Christmas to all!

Can’t help but see the beauty in a heavy snowfall beginning this morning at choretime. When I flicked the lights on everyone was laying in the barn. By the time I fed and bedded the feeder calves the cows had gotten up and wandered out to the bale feeder, and a blanket of snow over their backs had fell.

Happy Thanksgiving! We are blessed to have our customers who help keep our little farm going. The kids are forming a passion now in their younger years for the farm.
Here are their 4-H steers. These 2hrs some extra love and attention and will visit the county fair next summer for a show.

It’s that time of year again….fall means time to wean calves. To our community, please enjoy some extra belllowing for a few days. By Halloween there should be less mommas crying.

For those of you moms out there, I’m reminded we worry about our babies during life changes more than the babies worry!
