We are thrilled to be a part of the Salida farmers market again this summer. We had a great opening day at the market last Saturday and we’re excited to be back at the Alpine Park tomorrow morning from 8am-12pm.

We will have wide selection grass-fed and finished beef and lamb available, as well as free-range eggs. Our meat selection includes everything from ground beef and lamb, steaks, roasts, lamb chops, beef jerky, and more.

For those unable to make it to the market, we also offer order pickups in Salida and Buena Vista on Tuesday evenings. More information on pickups can be found on our website. We hope to see you all tomorrow!

When arriving at the ranch, you might notice this horse statue resting near the entrance. Created by local sculptor, Bruce Carr, this sculpture is titled “Curiosity”, masterfully capturing the profile of a curious horse. Bruce composes his sculptures from found materials - driftwood, steel, and even barbed wire are repurposed to create his works. We are so grateful that Bruce gifted this beautiful sculpture to the ranch, it’s a wonderful addition of art into our landscape. You can learn more about Bruce’s art here- https://brucecarr.org

Each spring, we begin the process of moving our animals from our winter pastures in Coaldale up to the ranch for high-altitude summer grazing.

Spring preparations kick off with checking and fixing fencing, moving the portable chicken coop, and installing temporary electric fences for our sheep and chickens.

The moving process involves many trips with the trailer to transport our chickens, sheep, cattle, and horses, but we are so glad to have all of them up at the ranch again!

This year, we are thrilled to host our largest group of apprentices yet. On Sunday, we welcomed Samantha, our fourth apprentice joining us for the season.

“Hello! My name is Samantha. I am from Colorado and currently studying livestock animal science at Colorado State University. I am excited to work at Badger Creek Ranch this summer! I learned about the opportunity through a local farmers market and knew immediately that it would be a good fit. Like Badger Creek, I am passionate about regenerative agriculture. I also love cattle and am excited to be hands on and gain more experience! In my free time, I love anything and everything outside with family and friends!”

Working lands are essential to far more than just ranchers. Wildlife of all kinds depend on these landscapes for food, habitat, and migration. Our pastures are home to pronghorn, elk, a variety of bird species, and more.

Although national parks offer a beneficial baseline sanctuary for wildlife, these are becoming increasingly isolated between sprawling cities and other developments, making natural migration patterns increasingly difficult.

Working lands, both private and public, help augment the limitations of national parks, proving natural corridors between otherwise divided wildlife reserves. As more land continues to be affected by urbanization, ranching remains one of the few pathways to subsist off the land without significant development. With careful management, grazing can both help protect local wildlife and also support the resiliency of these landscapes through regenerative practices.

Please help us welcome Maddy, one of our apprentices joining the team this summer.

Maddy is a lifelong horse girl who was born and raised in Texas. She has degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. In college, she competed on UT’s equestrian team. Aside from brief stints as a farm volunteer, she is completely new to the agricultural world and is coming to Badger Creek to honor her deep love for the environment, animals, and sustainable climate solutions. She absolutely cannot wait to start getting her hands dirty with the wonderful staff at BCR!

After an unseasonably warm and dry winter, last week thankfully brought us some much-needed moisture. Last Wednesday, we got six inches of snow, briefly transforming the ranch into a beautiful snowscape.

Meet Jordyn, one of our apprentices joining us this season to complete her second year in the Quivira Coalition‘s New Agrarian Program.
“I wanted to be an apprentice at Badger Creek Ranch because it is the perfect community to help me grow both professionally and as a person. I admire the goals and values of the ranch as well as the care that goes into maintaining them. I am excited to learn from amazing mentors and other apprentices this summer!” - Jordyn
