My 🔥🎬 on the recent egg size debate.
Stop demanding made up things! Period.
Why do I say this?
1. There's no Standard for egg size/weight in the Standard of Perfection for breeds, for what they lay or for what you should hatch from. And they took everything into consideration to describe how a bird should look to be cinsidered within the standard, if egg size determined SOP of a bird, I think they'd have covered that?!
2. Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large eggs do have standards within the USDA for EATING eggs laid by Production breeds and sold by producers, and are regulated and governed by an entirely different standard and system, unrelated to SOP for breeding. They also get weighed by the dozen and must meet the average for a dozen, not each individual egg.
3. Chickens, even production breeds are not robots. Not each egg is going to come out like its been 3d printed from a model. Thus why they are measured by the dozen according to USDA standards for eating.
4. When breeding, we are weighing (see what I did there) our decisions against a plethora of
real standards for the bird, according to the poultry Bible, aka the 'Standard of Perfection', and again there is nothing in there about egg weights for hatching.
5. It's not right for anyone to demand that another breeders bird's lay eggs that weigh the same as theirs. Each line can and will be different. Most especially if you comparing birds that were bred for their large eggs and production (because that's what you value) vs birds that were bred with the SOP in mind.
6. You can only measure your weights against your own. Why? Because you DO NOT know the other breeder's lines. You don't know what hen laid what. What egg it hatched from. What it looked like as a chick. How it eventually grew out. And how all of that compares to all of the other hens and their history within their breeding group. So again, you can only measure against yourself.And your birds and what you hatch and how they grow and then what you breed from there on.
7. So in conclusion. STOP making up your own standards and holding others accountable to your standard. You don't get to do that in any other way other than choosing what you think is valuable to you in moving forword with your program when you order eggs. You don't get to assume or accuse that eggs are from pullets. Because egg size can vary by hen within a program that the breeder chose to compliment their program. You don't get to blast them all over the internet. There's a reason you ordered from them. You saw their birds and you wanted their birds. End of story.
