Bent E Quarter Horses

This is the first pasture my first horse ever lived in.

Bent E wouldn’t be here without that mare.

Today she’s buried on this place, but her impact is still everywhere.

Now this pasture is home to our broodmares and their foals. One of those mares is her daughter, raising a foal of her own by SJR More Cowbell

There’s something special about watching generations of horses graze in the same pasture where part of the dream began.

Some things change.

A compass was invented before a clock.

Maybe that’s because it’s better to be moving the right way than worrying about how long it’s taking.

We spend a lot of our lives looking at the clock.

Wondering why we’re not further along.
Wondering why someone else seems ahead.
Wondering why the things we hoped for haven’t happened yet.

But a clock can only tell you where you are in the day.

A compass tells you where you’re headed.

The truth is, progress isn’t always fast. Sometimes it’s a horse that finally understands after weeks of confusion. Sometimes it’s a business that grows one customer at a time. Sometimes it’s simply getting up and trying again when yesterday didn’t go your way.

The pace may not be what you hoped for.

But if you’re headed in the right direction, don’t get discouraged.

Keep taking the next step.
Keep learning.
Keep growing.

A slow mile in the right direction will always beat a fast mile in the wrong one.

What I Love About Eventing

I’ve always thought eventing is the cow horse of the English world.

One horse. Three events. A complete test of horsemanship.

A horse has to be disciplined enough for dressage, athletic enough for jumping, and brave enough for cross-country.

That’s asking a lot from a horse.

It’s also asking a lot from a rider.

To be successful, you can’t just be good at one thing. You have to develop a horse that is versatile enough to handle whatever challenge comes next.

That’s something I’ve always respected.

In a world that often rewards specialization, there is something special about horsemen who pursue versatility.

The horse has to think.

The rider has to think.

And together they have to be prepared for a wide variety of situations.

I’ll probably never be an eventer, but I have tremendous respect for the people who are.

Because every time I watch a good one, I see the same thing I admire in great cow horses:

A horse and rider who are ready for whatever comes next.

And that’s just awesome.

Lessons don’t always show up on the same day as the win.

Sometimes they show up when you miss the lead change, or the pattern falls apart, or the run just wasn’t what you hoped it would be.

And that’s the part nobody posts.

But lessons are doing something wins can’t do on their own—they’re building you a support system. Something to lean on when things don’t go your way. Something that keeps you from starting over every time you don’t place.

Wins are great. We all want them.

But lessons are what make sure you’re still in the game long enough to actually get them.

So if today wasn’t a “win”… it might still be a step that sets up the next one.

And around here, we’ll take that every time.

Yet they’re completely different kinds of horses.

💛 Vegas — all the chrome, all the presence, and the kind of filly that seems to know people are watching.

🤎 The Buckskin Filly — a little more understated, but balanced, athletic, and built with a job in mind.

One of the things we love about breeding horses is that there isn’t just one right answer. Sometimes the horse that catches your eye across the pasture is exactly the one you want. Other times it’s the quiet one that keeps getting better every time you look at her.

So we’ll ask a different question this time:
