Look for the good stuff. Yesterday was a long day. It was pitch black dark when we headed to the house for the night. Hay work continues. Here you see two photos taken from inside the tractor and one taken as we prepped for our work. We will continue to do hay work. Look at the hay and the photo of a butterfly on a pear. The pear fell from a limb and lay on the ground near a pasture gate. Can you see how lovely is the insect who visited us and the fallen pear? What a beauty! We leave the fruit “drops” on the ground for the deer. The deer love pears! How fun to see a butterfly enjoying the fruit too. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Thank you little, dainty, flyer for visiting with us. You brought some unexpected joy in a long, tiring day. Open your eyes to your surroundings. Don’t miss the good stuff. Beauty abounds! Hay work continues. Farmers are like the ant highlighted in Proverbs 6: 6 - 8

6 Go to the ant . . . ;
consider its ways and be wise!
7 It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
8 yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.

Our work now - in the heat of summer - is needed to enable us to feed our cattle in the cold, grey days of winter. Without prompting we get to work and store away winter provisions.

We have dry days ahead. You gotta make hay while the sun shines. Happy Tuesday, y’all!!

As we see August end, all eyes are on Fall. Right on cue, the color of the light is changing. A warm, soft autumnal hue washes over everything. Today will be summer hot, but we know that cooler days will come soon. Mother Nature has a regular rhythm known by critters large and small. Seasonal change is hardwired and necessary. After long days of labor, rest is required. Days shorten. Vegetation growth slows. The old falls away like browning leaves on tired tree limbs. Change will come. Embrace it. Rest. Rest is required when one is tired. Thanks to Mother Nature for keeping us in sync with the natural cycles of life. We name her as our employee of the week. Happy Monday, y’all!!

We were not expecting rain yesterday, but we got some. At about 2:00 pm we got a doozy of a downpour. Then we got another splash around 10:30. The rain cooled things down, so we were happy about that and were happy to get the moisture. What will the new day bring? Guess we will soon find out. To a grand new adventure! Happy Sunday, y’all!!

The cat crew members are slowly getting up to start their Saturday chores. The schedule for today allows for multiple breaks to get out of the heat. Even so, Dan and Buster are reticent about leaving the silo. Some days are exhausting. Do your best anyway. Focus forward. Do the work. Put in the time. Feel proud of having committed to the project at hand. Remember. You can do hard things. Happy Caturday, y’all!!

When you are happy that the high for the day will only be 91 degrees F, it is clear that one is in Alabama in August. The recent high heat was really hard on our fowl. Any respite from the heat is meaningful. Today we share photos of fowl being out and about. With less heat they can move away from the fans and enjoy being able to roam. We also share a bonus pic of calf Amber. She is happy with the more manageable temperatures too. Happy free range Friday, folks!!

We got a splash of rain yesterday, but clouds cleared quickly. The rain did cool things down a bit, so that was good. All of us at the farm were pleased with that. Back to reality today. Go get out into the world and do fabulous things . . . like being kind. To those to whom much is given much is required. Happy Thursday, y’all!

Last night — while the farm people were picking muscadines and scuppernongs — the calves, Tuffy and Amber, were playing and watching. They are curious, adventurous, and often bouncy. They are doing their best to learn and grow each day. Remember, play is the work of children. Play is how “young ins” practice new skills, build muscles, and fill their brains with everything that is needed to be a competent adult. Play is important and essential to successful development. Even grownups need to play. Play reduces the level of cortisol (a stress hormone that influences sugar levels and metabolism) and increases serotonin (the happy hormone that helps regulate mood, digestion, sleep, and blood clotting.) Soooo . . . what are you waiting on? Get out there and play! Happy Wednesday, y’all!

We’ll have a 71 to 93 degree F spread today. Compared to the heat advisories that we were having, this will be good. Yesterday’s clear sky made viewing the moon easy. It was big in the sky above us. Meanwhile, back on the ground, Otis got a little treat and some loving from Farmer Jon. Amber and Tuffy napped and played in the relatively cooler air. Last week was truly taxing on us. The heat was brutal and zapped every bit of one’s energy. We are already dreaming of cooler air and fall festivities. For now, we carry on. Happy Tuesday, y’all!!

How do you know that somebody is a leader? They have followers. Leadership isn’t conveyed by a position. It is a natural process where team members choose to join an action. They work as a team and are always assigned to shared tasks. They are often the first to move to a new pasture, and soon the other bovines follow. Even without a management title, these two are natural leaders. Cody May and Baby Virginia are inseparable. The two play, eat, and sleep together. Isn’t wonderful to have a special friend? Today they share something else. We name them as our employees of the week. Congratulations to the dynamic duo! Happy Monday, y’all!!
