Ever notice this pattern… how it all makes sense on the map ahead of time but mysteriously by the point I get plant piles in front of me and people waiting for answers, my brain goes fuzzy on what was going to go where. This year more than ever!
But the greenhouse is getting empty and thankfully our helpers were very patient with my last minute changes. đź’Ż% over-thinker problems.
Are you done planting your garden/yard or will you be working on it over the long weekend?

No, this was not ideal dahlia planting conditions. Yes, I was hiding under the shelter in my waterproof pants, and coat. Our crew on the other hand, were troopers. They were fully soaked and still smiling.
Did you get your tubers in the ground? I hope so!
If you lost your instruction sheet, here are our recommendations for planting your dahlias:
Once all risk of frost is gone and the soil is 60 degrees, find a location to plant your tubers. They like plenty of sun and do best in well-drained soil.
Place tuber in soil about 4 inches deep and at least a minimum of 8 inches to the nearest neighbor. IF there is an “eye” on the tuber, point it up. This will turn into future stems and leaves. Remember, eye to the sky! If the eye breaks off its ok, it will grow another. But DO take extra care not to break the neck of the tuber. If it works with the growth direction of the eye, lay the tuber on its side in the soil, like it is lying in bed.
Gently cover the tuber with soil. Avoid watering, until you see new growth/sprouts emerging from the ground. If you overwater at planting your tuber may rot.
If your tuber doesn’t grow right away, keep waiting. Many types take 2-6 weeks to emerge. Once your plant is established you may want to stake it up to prevent it from toppling as blooms begin to form. You get to continue to wait for what seems like an eternity to see YOUR beautiful blooms. This can take about 12+ weeks. But once the plants start showing their gorgeous colors it will continue to produce flowers until frost and it will all be worth the wait, and you too will be addicted to dahlias!

Originally, we had planned to do a video tutorial of how to divide tubers. But honestly, there’s 1 million of those already online and we want to offer you something so much more engaging and boost your skills without getting lost in the online wormhole.
This hands-on workshop will be great for giving you the confidence needed to learn how to tend your tubers. From digging to dividing the clumps we will walk you through our process. Come hear our tips for how we store them over winter and we will even send you home with a handful of new Dahlia tubers to add to your collection! It’s going to be a great time, will you sign up? Tell us your favorite cold weather drink to sip while you divide your tubers and we will draw one winner from the comments to get five free tubers! (Does not need to attend the workshop to win our random drawing but does need to be local-ish to collect prize) Go ahead and tag your dahlia loving friends too!

Spend 3 minutes with me to see how we dig our Dalias! Here are a few more pro tips:
*If you are a slightly warmer area around Spokane and haven’t frosted your blooms yet, you can wait until you get cooler temps or start digging now. Just be sure to pull them before the ground freezes or before it gets too mucky. (We pushed that envelope a bit in past years, when we got a quick weather change to sudden snow! Makes for much more difficult digging!)
*When you cut off the foliage, leave a little stem nub sticking up about 3 inches. Don’t cut flush with ground level. This helps keep track of where the tubers are in the dirt and will make sure you don’t cut too close to the crown and damage future eye growth that will be needed for next seasons plants.
*If you want to divide to smaller pieces for storage but don’t have time that cut down to individual tubers the same day that’s ok! Just make sure you put them safe out of the weather and get to the tubers before they start getting too dry. It often takes us a few weeks to process our large collection.
*Keep a spray bottle with fresh clean water near by, to spritz dahlias, as needed in storage. Keep an eye to see if their wood shavings start feeling too dry. You want just barely damp but not soggy!
*We recommend popping lids off boxes to inspect at least once each month during the winter to check if you have an issues. One bad tuber can ruin the whole lot, but diligent checking and removal of issues during storage can prevent rotting more than that one misfit!
*Your storage area should be somewhat climate controlled. It needs to stay warmer than 35 degrees but cooler than 50. Darkness is also ideal, but occasional light is ok. Perfect storage would be a root cellar if your home is old enough. More likely would be a cold basement, a well house, or maybe an insulated garage.

Are you storing in clumps or dividing to individual tubers?
Did I leave you with unaddressed questions? Feel free to drop them below! Happy digging, flower friends!
Do you want more tips on how to divide the clumps. Make sure you’ve signed up for emails special announcement about that coming later this weekend!

To each season there are joys and pains. The frost is always sad. But also a liiittle bit not too. My couch is calling and my TBR pile is towering. Must be time for fall break! Of course not for long. Dahlias will need to be lifted and processed in the next few weeks but for now we can take a few days off and ignore it all and embrace the cozier season.
With the weather is shifting, what activities are you looking forward to filling your free time with this autumn?

Inconceivable! It’s not all dead. 🤯 not sure if it qualifies as mostly dead but we managed to keep SOME things alive through temps in the 20s!!
Our final farewell, is $5off each U-pick bucket. Cut your own dahlia blooms continues with 10 included per bucket!
We’ll be open through Monday 10/13 then officially calling it 2025 season.
Next, the daunting task of garden cleanup and dahlia dig!
When do you buy your dahlia tubers? Fall or spring and why? Tell us below and you could win a tuber!
