So, our sheep are pretty hardy and can definitely handle some tough weather, but we had the ability to bring them into the barn for this ice storm, so we did. It is a little crowded, but it is only for a couple of days and I am sure they will prefer it to being out in the freezing rain. The chickens do have a tarp over their chicken tractor, but it doesn’t come all the way to the ground. They would probably be ok, but pulled into the barn gives them more wind protection and on Monday night, when it is supposed to get really cold, that could make a difference. Plus with all the sheep in the barn it will be just a little warmer in there. The horses are out, but they have blankets and the ducks are on their own!

Who can resist those faces? We had 8 kids born in April and they will need to find new herds. One buckling has already gone to a new home and his sister, pictured here, is weaned and ready to go any time now. She is 11 weeks old and well grown. The rest of the bunch will wean in July.

Found these two cuties when I went to feed this evening! The darker one with the white side patch is a buckling and the other is a doeling. Nice job Sundance!

The fall lambs are out on pasture and thriving. We have aome really beautiful lambs worthy of being breeders, but I am absolutely not going to keep any. We have got to get our flock size down and I can’t add any more until we get our numbers down. If you have thought about adding Hope Springs genetics to your flock, now is a good time. In April we will be selling lambs for Easter and Passover. In May the rest of the boys will go to the Muslim feast. No matter how nice they are they all have to go. Located in Colbert, GA.

Letting the weaned lambs out of the barn to start adapting to eating the greens. And we get lamb races!

What’s that white stuff? Sodium bicarbonate, baking soda. Why is it out in the pasture? We don’t have enough grass to support our flock through the winter. So during the dormant months our sheep eat hay and some grain. In the spring when the grasses come on the sheep can’t wait to gobble up all that good greeness! However, a rumen that is not used to greens can get in trouble with bloat and that can kill sheep. So we start by letting the sheep out on older grass, like the sides of the driveway or bits around the barn. At first they get a couple of hours and then back to the barn or the dry lot. Over the course of a few days they get more time on grass and finally they get the good stuff. Even with that approach when they hit the pasture with lush young rye grass, the rumen pH can get too acidic and lead to bloat. We always put baking soda out free choice when introducing diet changes. The sheep eat what they need to regulate their rumens. Actually, it’s not a bad idea to have it out all through the green season. But at the start it is critical. Hope this saves a few sheep.

After morning check on the 31st we worked most of the day on Cornel’s deer stand. When we went out to do evening chores HSF 188 was waiting with twin ram lambs. They are both white, but they are sired by S&S Finnegan so they should carry color. Only the second set of twins this season.

Thursday morning, the 31st, was misty and quiet. Many of the ewes were resting and there were no new lambs. But the time out wandering amongst the flock felt almost sacred. I am allowed to walk close by resting sheep and they don’t jump up and run away. My presence is accepted even by mamas with baby lambs close by. And the occasional favorites even come to greet me. Phantom just wanted a chin scratch and a pleasant greeting. Some days I am just honored to be the Flock Mistress!

Wednesday the 30th, morning check. HSF 203 Picante gave us a 9 pound ewe lamb sired by HSF Peter. The lamb was up and dry, well cleaned off by mom and following close by. Now that we have a number of lambs out on the pasture, I look for long tails to tell if they are new. We dock tails on the first day so I know all those short tailed lambs are already processed.

Tuesday morning, the 29th, looking out from the house we could just see a couple of dark shadows. 1637, a yearling first time mom, gave us a beautiful set of twin black lambs one ewe and one ram. These are the first twins of the season and the first S&S Finnegan offspring. 1637 was on the to be sold list, but is too nice to sell for meat, so we bred her. Now that she has these lambs she won’t be going anywhere for a while.
