Great weekend in Missouri this past weekend dropping off a couple nice ones, seeing some beautiful places, good cattle, and catching up with friends old and new. Truly a great visit. Thanks to Annie and Elijah Howell and family, Dan Parmele, and Clement and Shannon Jones for the tour and hospitality! Also got to catch up with OG breeders and friends Keith and Sherri Bakeman of the former Laughing Sun Ranch. They had bought Skye High Wayward Son from me back nearly 20 years ago probably. He was just a yearling then and they paid me $5000 which was a large dime for a young bull back then. He stuck around as part of the deal and bred my cows as a yearling and then went on to Denver to win Grand Bull. Weāve remained friends since then. Was great seeing them.
Lots has been running through my mind since. Between the heat and the fescue Missouri is certainly rough country for highland cattle but with proper management techniques can be pulled off successfully as these ranches have been able to. Keith and Sherri, coming from Colorado with their cattle, were in awe of the green green plentiful grass but reported weaning weights 1/3 less their traditional weatern grass wts originally! Fun fact/observation anyway.
Dan also raised an interesting observation (if i understand correclty) he made from selling at farmers markets. He thought he might be better off as selling his highland beef as just beef rather than advertized as highland feeling that people tended to shy away from highland beef for some reason⦠possibly because of the cutesy bs that has been a large marketing strategy/ part of the craze of late. People not being able to imagine eating a cute cow or not associating them with quality beef. This is concerning to me and also makes sense. Feel free to comment if any of you have ran into this. Iād be interested to know.
Anyway! Calving season begins! I wish mine wouldd hurry up. First one born two days ago. Happy trails.
