Washing wool doesn’t have to be complicated!

We have washed a LOT of wool over the years, and while every fleece is a little different, our basic washing routine stays pretty much the same.

Hot water, Dirty Ewe Wool Scour, and a little patience.

Some weeks in the mill are filled with beautiful wool coming off the machines. Other weeks? Not so much.

These past few weeks have been more about maintenance, adjustments, and a whole lot of trial and error than actual wool production.

Looking back at batches like this burgundy roving, when everything was running smoothly is a good reminder of the satisfying side of what we do.

Sometimes you have to spend a little time getting everything right before you can get back to making the good stuff.

What does a healthy fleece actually look like?

Using one of our Border Leicester fleeces, I’m talking through a few of the things we look at—staple length, strength, overall fleece condition, and some of the characteristics you’d expect to see in Border Leicester wool.

There’s a lot a fleece can tell you once you start looking a little closer.

Healthy sheep. Healthy wool. Good wool starts with the sheep not in the mill.

Shearing a wool sheep isn’t some traumatic, life-altering event. It’s a routine and necessary part of caring for sheep.

Yes, they look VERY different afterward. But that fleece grows back, and when shearing is done properly, it is not cruel.

We’ve raised sheep for nearly 30 years. Shearing day is simply part of sheep care around here.

It’s wool. It grows back. It’s a freaking haircut!

We made quite a few adjustments to the carder this past week (time consuming) and immediately saw an improvement with our finer BFL. The wool was running through so much better and we finally felt like we were getting somewhere.

And then…we found a break in some of the fleece. 🙄

That’s the reality of working with wool. You can adjust the equipment, change the process and troubleshoot until you get it right—but sometimes the fiber itself has other plans.

There are plenty of wins, but there are disappointments too.
