Produce Report!!!!
Market are going higher on most vegies. Trucking becoming real issue with diesel over $6.00 a gallon
Trucks coming out of California now close to $14,000. What that means to your head of lettuce, packed 24 in case, Case cost $15 to come across country that is 63 cents per head to truck from farmer to wholesaler, then you got to truck from wholesale to retail location add another 30 cents. Folks almost a $1.00 in trucking before any other cost is even added.
Cauliflower has skyrocketed as Canada product is ending
lettuce—iceberg, leaf & romaine Iceberg markets are higher as demand increases and lower field yields continue. Quality is fair to good. The romaine market is higher, while romaine hearts remain steady. Disease pressure persists; Lettuce quality will deteriorate over next couple weeks as we continue to wait for supplies from Arizona and Salinas crop comes to end
yellow & zucchini Eastern supplies remain tight, quality is good, demand is strong, and markets are steady to higher on both. Relief is not expected until GA production starts late next week
Berries—Blueberry Blueberry supplies are extremely limited as the Pacific Northwest harvest ends this week, leaving Peru as the remaining source; the market is high
Berries—Strawberry Supplies remain extremely limited as fields are converted to freezer production due to quality conditions and reduced yields. Volume will not increase until the southern areas begin production over the next few weeks. Markets are increasing.
Asparagus Volume improvement is expected on both coasts after Labor Day. Smaller sizing prevails, and quality issues continue. Demand exceeds supplies across all sizes, with small sizes showing the most availability. The market is higher and exceeds historical levels for this period. Looking like high prices thru the new year.
