Every year during calving season Carl and I would banter back and forth as to the projected counts of heifer calves versus bull calves. Carl wanted heifer calves so he could grow the herd and as we were more likely to keep all the heifer calves, I wanted bull calves so we could sell the steers later.
Well, tonight my son, Jon, informed me that I have another bull calf. A couple days ago, he told me that my cow; Shaniqua, had a bull calf too and his cow; Bessie had a heifer calf the same day. It reminded me of Carl’s theory on calving averages. It was simple. Typically, you’ll average half heifer calves and half bull calves. Made sense – 50/50.
I’ve known this to happen every year with one exception; the year we had our first Beefmaster calves’ and the heifer calves far outnumbered the bull calves. Both Carl and I were surprised by it all and seen it as a good sign that we were getting so many heifer calves to increase the herd. I miss those days of bantering with Carl about whether the next calf was going to be a heifer calf or a bull calf and who was pulling ahead in the law of calving averages. Well, it should come as no surprise after counting in Jon’s heifer calves and mine, it appears we are at about a 50/50 average so far and as always Carl was right again.
