Farm kids don’t just watch life happen, they step right into it.

This morning one of our girls had a uterine torsion- when the uterus twists during labor and the calf can’t be delivered normally.

Thanks to the expertise of Doc Joe and quick intervetion, the calf was born alive and healthy. Obviously a hard calving on the cow but she is expected to be ok as well. 🐄

When the windchill hits -20° I’m extra thankful for a warm tie-stall barn 🤍 The cows are cozy… but the real battle lately has been spreading manure and keeping the spreader from freezing and keeping my kids from taking my last tiny bits of my sanity 😅 Farm life doesn’t stop for the cold. Bundle up, keep moving, and figure it out one chore at a time.

But also spring can come any day now

Cranberry Bliss Cow's Milk Soap 🍒🥛🧼

A bright, sweet, and lightly spiced fragrance. It opens with juicy red berries, rhubarb, green leaves, and orange, then warms into crisp apple and a hint of black pepper. A cozy base of musk, white woods, clove, and amber. Infused with essential oils of orange, tea tree, black pepper, and guaiacwood, it’s both uplifting and comforting.

We are so blessed and fortunate that we can say our little girl is still with us and completely healthy. For those that haven't heard, Bonnie was in a freak accident and was found unresponsive. After only 4 days in the hospital, she is able to be discharged alive and free from any effects of the injury. I am not one to post things like this, and I'm shaking as I type this, but I feel a calling to share our story. If you are a parent or a care provider for children, please know CPR or find a CPR class as soon as possible. We've been told by every doctor that CPR saved her life, and we'd be having a different conversation if CPR was not administered when it was. I want to thank everyone who has texted us support, food was dropped off continuously at our house, for all the help getting chores done at home, for all the first responders and amazing hospital staff, and mostly thank you for everyone's prayers. It's been hard to keep everyone updated and get back to everyone's messages, so if I've missed your message, know that I got it and appreciate everyone who has reached out. It is a real-life miracle that she's okay

I'd say we surely weren't ready for the snow(or the cold)! Between not having everything put away for the winter and batteries that need replaced. For that matter we dont even have any corn combined yet. At least the kids had an absolute blast running around and playing in the snow. And it sure is pretty to look at

These are the moments you kind of forget how hard farming can be and how much the money balancing act stinks that comes with it. Our margins are microscopic, and it's not looking good for the foreseeable future.

But when a cow calves in and she happens to be carrying twin heifers, and everyone does amazing and is healthy; somewhere deep down, you feel so much gratitude for the opportunity to live this life 😊 ❤️ 🐄

Squeezed in some family time today and hiked to the gorge and then back to the barn for night chores 🐄

Zoar Valley fun fact 👇

Back in the 1920s and 1930s, engineers surveyed and mapped out a dam that would have flooded most of the Zoar Valley gorge, turning it into a massive reservoir The proposed Zoar Valley Dam would have submerged the waterfalls, forests, and farms, including parts of what are now the Ross Pond and Valentine Flats areas.

Geologists discovered that the gorge’s shale bedrock was too brittle and porous to safely support a dam that size. When they realized the rock would crumble under the pressure, the whole project was scrapped.

Thanks to that “failure,” Zoar Valley’s wild cliffs, waterfalls, and old-growth forests were never flooded.

One of the farms that was bought/took for the proposed project was the Ross family's farm. The family eventually moved and bought the farm that we're farming today

“Just a little while longer, and the wicked will be no more . . . But the meek will possess the earth, and they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.”—Psalm 37:10, 11
