I recently saw someone post about how their bird was too "clingy". I couldn't help but feel compelled to speak up. Jalapeno and Louie are velcro birds sometimes.
This is my response which wasn't allowed by admins in the group:
"First of all, please don't say 'it'. Just a pet peeve of mine. I know you meant no offense or anything.. but please.. these are intelligent little creatures. Small parrots are as smart as a two or three year old human. Large parrots rival a seven to eight year old. They have better language skills than chimpanzees or apes. They have agency. They have emotions. I know you're looking for ways to train her to be more independent. That's okay. That's normal. But please, consider her situation...
Let's reframe this. A little creature, new to this world, has found a loving, warm, gentle giant who seems to pay attention to them. This creature is scared and knows, deep down from millinnia of survival, that the only chance she has is to form a bond with a flock mate. She sensed that you were a loving entity. She could feel that. She risked it all to attempt to bond with you.
She knew, "this might be my forever companion". She proceeded, against everything telling her otherwise, to try to connect with you. It took weeks to build to the courage. She did. For the first time in her precious little life, she found a match. The most important thing for a parrot - a partner.
Parrots bond for life. They have a divorce rate (yes, it's recorded and studied) of ~15% which is significantly less than humans. They can, and do, die of broken heart syndrome when their life partners die.
You are the most important thing in the world to her. Every instinct she has tells her to never let you go. She found the best partner in the world. The best companion. The one who tolerates her mood swings. The one who provides for her. The one who gives her warmth. The one who gives her meaning.
To you, she is a part of your life. To her, you are her life.
That's why she's clingy. She can't live without you. Not a life worth living, anyway.
We're so blessed to be chosen by these beautiful intelligent creatures. What a privilege."
Thanks, Sean
