Oh snotty nose, thats what I have with all the w**ds blooming after I venture out to snap pictures! These are some older cows, first calf heifers and bred heifers. We've had so much rain we are overwhelmed with fence line brush. Pointless to cut every year. Remedy is the remedy for the fence lines I think. Any volunteers? ;)

Firewheels are taking over, so pretty, but they overwhelm the grass! Past few weeks super busy with the harder side of keeping things going. We've had great rain, really more than I expected. Firewheels are pretty to see in a field, but they gotta go!

Pictures from the past week. We got some needed rain and the pastures and cows enjoyed it. That said, you can tell we are past due for a few loads of chicken litter, the grass isn't responding as it should and can.
And I'm about ready for a good herbicide spray as well.
We've not done that in all these years, and it's not like we get a premium for organic or grass-fed live cattle. I'm ready for some w**d killer!

Throwback Thursday! This is J.West's Doc's Gal in 2015. She was sired by J.West's Mazarati, himself a DFTX "Doc" Watson son out of a Popeye daughter, and Doc's Gal's dam was J.West's MsRae, a DFTX "Doc" Watson daughter. So - a straight on line breed to the original Doc (not W.W. Doc, son of Watson).
She had a beautiful udder and was just a great moderate cow in every way. She was an outstanding cow.
The heifer Doc's Gal has just calved was out of J.West's Milo, a Carter son, who was also sired by Mazarati out of a Popeye daughter line. The heifer calf was given the name, J.West's Gentry. Mazarati is a paternal brother to both Elvis and W.W. Doc, and has semen still available.
So, a lot of close breeding that I actually never gave much thought to back then, beyond never breeding beyond half brother and sister. One of my best original heifers/cows was a Double Popeye daughter, Halliburton Allouise, the dam of Carter.
So, did you follow all of that? It took some precise thinking on my part to try to convey it clearly. Did I?

We have had such pleasure, such simple pleasure, simple joy, from our llamas for about 25 years. Sadly, we lost our last one on Friday.
Momma Llama, that was her name, what we called her. She was about 22 years old, and surely had a good life. She will be sorely missed, already is missed.
Mike adored her and was in tune to her every need want or mood. He was a bit worried as she was sleeping more, not so interested in the freshest best alfalfa he could find.
But still, it was a shock, just so improbable ... Momma Llama was part of the land, the air, each day. How could she really leave us?
But she did, and we are so thankful all those years ago we brought a llama pair in to our lives. The first photo is the grand dam with her 4 beautiful daughters. Momma Llama was the youngest, and lived the longest. We miss her.
