A study of a historical building at the old ranch headquarters on the Medano side of the ranch by Jill Soukup (). The San Luis Valley of present-day Colorado, where the ranch is located, has been utilized by humans for at least 10,000 years according to archaeological evidence. By the 1800s, the era to which the old ranch headquarters date, both Hispano sheep herders and Anglo cattle ranchers had settled parts of the Valley for livestock grazing.
