Each year from July 3 to August 11th, Sirius (the brightest star in the Canis Major constellation) rises and sets right alongside the sun. Because of this, the Ancient Greeks and Romans thought that the bright star combined its light and heat with the sun to create the dangerously hot weather of late summer. They called this time of the year diēs caniculārēs, or "dog days". And that's why we in modern times call August "the dog days of summer"!
