When we found out our son would be playing in a baseball tournament in Poulsbo, I KNEW it was my chance to check off a bucket list item!!! Today we got to eat at Sourdough Willy’s owned and operated by the amazing Master Pizzaiolo .lawrencegrant . Will and I met a few years back at a event and Pizza Expo. It was a pleasure to try his Detroit style pizza. It was easily the best pizza I’ve ever had! 🤤🤤. If you’re ever in Kingston or Bainbridge, please check out and . I promise, you won’t be disappointed!

Thanks Will for my bucket list day!! 🍕🍕 And thank you for using SG flour!!! ❤️

One part of farming that we really enjoy is the opportunity to experiment with new crops. Last year we worked with a company to grow some forage pea seed for them, the issue was that after the peas reach maturity this specific variety falls down, making them difficult to harvest. The solution was to try seeding a low rate of oats with the peas (sometimes called inter-cropping or companion-cropping), hoping that they would help the peas stand up. After a successful first attempt last year, we are back at it again this year, doing some more trials dialing in the optimal seeding rate between the peas and oats. We first direct seed the peas at a 2” depth with our AgPro drill (pics 2 and 3), then come back a couple days later and seed the oats with a friends John Deere 455 double disk drill at 3/4” deep (pics 4 and 5). At harvest we will harvest both crops at the same time (pics 6 and 7). The peas and oats will then be separated, with both crops then ready to go to market. This has been a great learning experience so far and are looking forward to see where it can go, lots more questions and future experiments to come!

March and April brought us some really nice weather, allowing us good conditions to get into the field to plant our spring crops a little earlier than usual. That drier “baseball weather” has put us behind average in terms of total crop year rainfall going into May, at 2.38 inches. March was the furthest behind, only accumulating 0.93” when we typically get 2.19”. The lack of rain and above average temps did allow for some fast growing conditions for our winter wheat, and warm enough soils to quickly get the spring crops out of the ground. Overall, crops look great, now praying that the weatherman is correct and the rain hits us over the next couple days!

2 - Soft white spring wheat (Ryan)
3 - Small brown lentils (Pardinas)
4 - Food barley (Katana)
5 - Soft white winter wheat (Shine-Exceed)
