Today was the final day of winter preparations for our bees. This year I decided to try something different than what I’ve done in past winters. Normally I would set the bees up with a vented hive and quilt box. This year I’m doing a condensing hive. That means that the bees will keep more heat and moisture inside the hives. I’ve added moisture boards to hold back some of the water droplets. Above the moisture board is 2 inch styrofoam board to help retain heat. Finally, each hive is wrapped with a Wellington wrap. These wraps are cost effective, reusable, and can be obtained through the Ontario Beekeepers Association. Prior to this, all the hives were fed about 3 lbs of SuperFuel from . Most of the hives ate everything, but some still have a bit to go. Oh, and of course, the bees have had their oxalic acid v***r treatments for mites.

It’s a finger swarm! This queen has been taking mating flights over the past few days. Looks like she’s got a hind leg injury and is having trouble making it back to her hive on this windy day.
