The Monmouth County Homebrewers Association met on May 18 at Twin Lights Brewing in Tinton Falls. The meeting was moved up one week due to Memorial Day weekend.

President Kevin coordinated details for the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Clone Project, with participating members planning to meet for ingredient distribution ahead of the July tasting.
Members also discussed different methods for adding sugar during the brewing process, including additions during the boil, while transferring wort, and during active fermentation.
Another upcoming highlight: one member mentioned plans to bring in homemade wines from several vintages for future tastings.
The night wrapped up with seven homebrews shared, including a Belgian Dubbel, multiple IPAs, a Dunkelweizen, Belgian Hybrid, and even a homemade grape juice wine.

The Monmouth County Homebrewers Association met on April 27, 2026 at Twin Lights Brewing, with 11 members in attendance.
President Kevin reminded members that the deadline for the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale project submission closed that evening. The group also moved the tasting of those beers to July, with June’s meeting focusing on fruit additions in homebrew.
The main topic of the night was temperature control, with a strong discussion around the tools and techniques members use. Equipment mentioned included brew jackets, desk heaters, Inkbird controllers, heating mats, and even some more creative DIY approaches.
Most members shared that they rely on freezers paired with temperature controllers, and the conversation expanded into ways to adapt setups for different fermenters, including conicals. The group’s DIY mindset led to some creative problem-solving ideas.
Vince brought in a modified stainless steel bucket and demonstrated how he manages fermentation with his setup.
There was also discussion about organizing another bulk grain purchase, potentially coordinated through our host. More details to come.
The meeting concluded with a tasting of 12 homebrews, the largest since June 2025.

The Monmouth County Homebrewers Association met on March 30, 2026 at Twin Lights Brewing in Tinton Falls, with 11 members in attendance.

With President Kevin away, Secretary Tom led the meeting, which focused on an exciting upcoming group brewing project. Members will be brewing the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale recipe as published by Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. Each participant will use the same ingredients on their own system, giving the group a chance to compare how different setups impact the final beer. A poll will be sent out to coordinate bulk ingredient purchases.

We also discussed potential brewery meet-ups, including opportunities with Belford Brewing Company, Alternate Ending Beer Co., and Bakes Brewing Co. These informal events will give members a chance to tour facilities and speak with professional brewers.
Vince brought in a DIY jockey box, showcasing a portable draft system built from a wheeled cooler with dual taps and CO₂ input—an excellent example of creative homebrewing hardware.

The club also began planning for American Homebrewers Association Big Brew on May 2, with Bill offering to host at the Sea Girt Firehouse.

Another idea discussed was a “Pepsi challenge” style blind tasting, where members would try to identify beer styles and ingredients without prior knowledge.
The meeting concluded with a tasting of eight homebrews.

Seven members attended, and the meeting kicked off at 7:11 PM with President Kevin leading a discussion on fermentation vessels.
Kevin brought two examples for the group to examine: the Fermzilla All Rounder and Fermzilla Conical. The group discussed the differences between them, including the conical’s bottom port for trub and yeast collection and their ability to handle pressure fermentation.
Members shared their experiences using a variety of fermentation setups including:
Fermzilla fermenters
Glass carboys
Stainless steel fermenters
Plastic buckets
The conversation covered the pros and cons of each, as well as temperature control methods used during fermentation.
Member Eric also gave a short presentation on the Fermzilla systems and shared his experience brewing with them.
The group briefly checked in on the closed brewery recipe project. Mike reported that his version is currently finishing fermentation, and we look forward to tasting these beers soon.

January 2026 Meeting Recap
Our January meeting was held at our home base, Twin Lights Brewing in Tinton Falls, NJ, on February 2, 2026. The meeting was originally scheduled earlier in the month but was postponed due to a winter storm.
We had 9 members in attendance. Before the meeting began, members were able to take advantage of a generous equipment donation from Mike, a local homebrewer who is downsizing. Several pieces of equipment found new homes.
The meeting kicked off at 7:12 p.m. with a style discussion led by President Kevin on Flemish Red ales. This classic Belgian sour style sparked a great conversation around acidity, fruit character, and balance. The group tasted four examples:
Rodenbach Classic
Rodenbach Alexander
Duchesse de Bourgogne
Kevin’s homebrewed Flemish Red
Following the tasting, Tom B. shared a practical demo on using canned yeast starters, walking through the steps using products like Propper Starter from Omega Yeast.
We also discussed how a set of recipes from a former brewery will be used for an upcoming club project, with a group tasting planned no earlier than March.
The final topic of the night was American Homebrewers Association’s Big Brew Day, a national event that members are encouraged to participate in.
The meeting concluded with a 9-beer homebrew tasting featuring a wide range of styles, from IPAs and stouts to barleywine and pilsner. The meeting wrapped up at 8:50 p.m.
Our next meeting is:
