We are excited to offer apple composting this year during September and October!

Curbside Doorstep Customers
-Simply place one extra bucket of apples alongside your regular bucket on your service day.
-Our drivers will flag the extra bucket, and we'll bill you for the additional material on the back end.
-Please only place one extra bucket per service day to ensure we have enough space for everyone's material.

Drop-Off Customers & All Others
-Purchase an Apple Compost Drop-Off through our webshop.
-Plan to drop off your apples at our site in Columbia Falls.
-Drop-offs are available Saturdays and Sundays in September and October, between 9:30–1:30 and 2:00–4:30.

We love seeing where Dirt Rich compost ends up — especially when it’s growing food that comes right back to our own table.

Three P’s Farm is a small diversified vegetable and flower farm outside of Whitefish, started by our friend Florence “Flo” Parsley. Flo farms with a real focus on soil health, using regenerative practices like minimal soil disturbance, keeping the soil covered, and adding compost and amendments based on annual soil testing.

We’re lucky enough to be Three P’s CSA members ourselves, so every week we get to see (and eat!) some of what all that good soil is producing.

There’s something pretty satisfying about this little local loop: our community’s food scraps become compost → that compost helps build local soil → local farmers grow beautiful food → that food ends up back on tables in our community.

And on a personal note, Flo is just awesome. We love seeing a young woman building a farm of her own here in the Flathead and are proud that Dirt Rich gets to play a small part in what she’s growing.

**4.89 tons composted.**

That's how much food waste and certified compostable service ware was collected at **Under the Big Sky Festival** this year and kept out of the landfill.

Making that happen took a team of **eight women** working through long, hot days to sort material by hand:

, , , Krista, Serena, Lucy, and Lori.

Thank you for putting in the work.

Thanks also to the food vendors for complying with the festival's certified third-party compostable ware requirements. That commitment is what makes composting at this scale possible.

Most of all, thank you to the and for continuing to prioritize local composting and recycling. Choosing diversion over disposal takes planning, coordination, and resources, and we're grateful they continue to make that investment each year.

This was one of two major festivals we partnered with this summer. Between Under the Big Sky and , more than **6 tons** of organic material was diverted from the landfill and returned to local soils.

Every event that chooses composting helps build a more resilient local food system, one load at a time. 🌱

🌱🎶 VOLUNTEERS WANTED 🎶🌱

Want to experience Under the Big Sky from a different perspective while helping keep valuable resources out of the landfill?

Dirt Rich Compost is looking for a handful of community-minded volunteers to join our Waste Diversion Team during this year's festival. Volunteers help attendees sort compost, recycling, and landfill materials, making it possible for thousands of pounds of organic material to be returned to the soil instead of buried in a landfill.

No composting experience is necessary—we'll provide all the training you need.

As a thank-you for your time, volunteers will receive:

✨ A gift card at the conclusion of the event
✨ Hands-on experience with sustainability and waste diversion
✨ The chance to be part of something meaningful for our community and environment

We're looking for people who are:

We’re hiring a part-time driver to join our team this summer 🌱

We’re looking for someone who:
• enjoys driving and mostly solo work
• is physically strong and able to move 200 lb bins
• is a confident, safe driver
• can drive our small dump truck (no CDL required)
• is available Mondays and Thursdays from June–September for around 15-18 hours per week of work

This position is a big part of helping us keep food scraps out of the landfill and returning nutrients back to local soil through composting.

It’s a great fit for someone who likes independence, driving, and doing meaningful hands-on work in the community.

We’re so happy to highlight Agile Goat Flower Farm as one of the beautiful farms we cycle our compost back to.

is growing more than flowers — they’re growing beauty, seasonality, and connection to the land right here in Montana. Their farm is such a lovely example of what can happen when care, intention, and healthy soil come together.

There’s something especially meaningful about seeing compost return to a place like this — helping support blooms that are rooted in local soil and grown with heart.
