Some regional and state beekeepers have expressed strong concerns about the USDA approval process for potentially releasing a non-native flea beetle to attack and prevent the spread of Chinese tallow trees.
The American Honey Producers Association, American Beekeeping Federation, and state beekeeping associations in Louisiana and Texas have been following this issue and have expressed opposition to this flea beetle release to USDA officials and our federal and state legislators. AHPA officers and board members met in May in Washington, D.C. with USDA and EPA officials as well as various US Senators and Representatives serving on key committees. The AHPA emphasized economic consequences for beekeepers and ecological harm due to loss of this pollinator forage.
The AHPA has asked for LBA cooperation in their presenting further information to the USDA from individual beekeepers on possible economic consequences due to loss or reduction of tallow as forage for their bees. The AHPA is trying to mount a spirited and effective argument by submitting letters from many beekeepers prior to the public comment period later this fall in this multi-stage decision process.
Specifically, the AHPA has requested letters from beekeepers indicating their views on 1) the percentage loss of personal or company honey production due to loss of tallow forage and 2) how this loss of tallow might affect hive build-up for production of nucs and queens. The AHPA is hiring a special environmental consultant for this tallow campaign to conduct an economic and ecological assessment to present to USDA officials in charge of this biological control decision. They have communicated that beekeepers who would like to help them in the tallow campaign can also donate funds to help with campaign expenses. Listed below is the officer at the AHPA who will be handling the letters and also donations. A deadline of August 1, 2018 has been given by the AHPA for those who would like to support the tallow campaign by submitting a letter or making a donation. We, as the Executive Committee of the LBA, hope that you'll consider responding to this request.
Letters should be sent to Cassie Cox, AHPA Executive Secretary at [email protected] or mailed to her address (PO Box 435, Mendon, UT 84325). Donations can be made on the AHPA web site or sent to Cassie Cox.
