At Hog

Haven Farm we specialize in the Gloucestershire Old Spot (GOS) pig. Our GOS’s sows are registered with the GOSPBU and approved as pasture raised by the AWA. The GOS is an English breed of pig named after the county of Gloucestershire. It is known for its docility, intelligence, and prolificacy. The breed’s maternal skills enable it to raise large litters of piglets on pasture and its disposition and self-sufficiency make it attractive for farmers raising pasture animals. It is recognized as the oldest pedigree spotted pig in the world. Both The Prince of Wales and The Princess Royal keep GOS pigs on their respective Gloucestershire estates. They are regarded as thrifty and excellent foragers, supplementing their feed with roots and vegetation. With excellent maternal instincts and an even temperament, Old Spots tend to be very calm, good-natured animals, another trait that makes them desirable to small farmers. The females are devoted mothers, while the males seldom pose a threat to piglets. The GOS was once a very popular breed of pig. With the advent of large scale intensive farming, certain lean, pale, high-yield breeds have been chosen to suit the factory conditions and needs of mass-production. Many old breeds of pig have died out or are in danger of doing so, including the GOS. However, owing to increasing consumer pressure attributable to a greater awareness of and concern about farming conditions, pigs are increasingly being reared outdoors and marketed on a local level. In addition, more consumers are looking for a higher quality, more nutritious meat, as opposed to a cheap, bland product. In these conditions, old heritage breeds well-suited to living outdoors and sustaining on pasture, such as the GOS, have increasingly been chosen by farmers, butchers, restaurateurs, and consumers more conscientious to taste, health, and environmental considerations. In addition to GOS’s, we offer a variety of other mixed heritage and modern breed hogs, combining characteristics to get the best of their genetics. Like our GOS’s, all our pigs have been feed a regular and complex vegetarian diet; including balanced non-GMO grains, acorns, pumpkins, daily produce, barley, and, of course, all the pasture and hay they can eat. They are also given a supplement of high quality cow or goat whey nearly daily, which is the secret to the outstanding marbling of our otherwise very lean pasture feed meat and its flavorful fat. We go to a great amount of time and effort to gather and supply this diet to our animals and the result is a highly nutritious, lean muscle that is yet well marbled with a melt-in-your-mouth, deliciously yielding and healthy fat.
