On Monday August 17th we hosted a farm tour for our town library, the Saxton B. Little Free Library as part of their summer programming. Little did folks know that we live in Saxton B Little’s house - circa 1832.

Public libraries are just the best. Not only do they have books but so many opportunities to learn and engage at any age.

You know you’ve got a good friend when you even dress the same! The terrific teamster Ivy left her oxen in the kingdom and came ‘down south’ to CT to visit a couple friends. She and her beautiful animals at Hitchpoint farm are an integral part of Draft Animal Power Network showing that yes, people still farm with oxen, horses and mules. Check them out!

It’s that time of year!
This is the earliest we have started harvesting melons. First up is Juice Box from High Mowing Organic Seeds - a cute striped sweet red icebox watermelon. Turns out a couple cantaloupe were also ready today with a whole lot more to come. We grow True Love, again from High Mowing Organic Seeds. Next up will be our yellow melon, baby doll and then finally crimson sweet, making of melon season last most all of August probably.

Although these varieties are pricey hybrids they really have consistent yields and taste great.

We are USDA and use organically grown seed varieties whenever possible. High Mowing, out of the northeast kingdom of Vermont, exclusively sells organic seeds.

They’re almost here!

Coming soon - delicious farm grown certified organic cantaloupe.

I never liked cantaloupe before I started working on farms. I thought it kinda tasted like cardboard that was orange. A little crunchy with little flavor. That’s how commercial cantaloupe comes to us because they are picked unripe and shipped across the country to then sit in the grocery store for a couple weeks until you buy it. But ours are like a totally different fruit!

Tomato tunnel pruning

Left: unpruned
Right: pruned

We had a great visit from Shuresh Ghimire, the UConn Extension Vegetable Specialist, who took samples of diseased tomato leaves back to the lab at the university to look at under the microscope. He diagnosed alternaria. A robust pruning was in order since these are in a high tunnel without any fans (no electricity yet).

Hoping we can keep this disease from spreading because there is a lot of beautiful fruit ready to ripen!
