Our Story
Allen Acres Farm was established by my husband’s Great grand parents in the early 1900’s. The farm has always had cattle on it. They use to grow fruits and vegetables and keep all different types of livestock. Throughout the years, the farm has stayed in the family. After the death of my husband’s grandparents, the farm was left unattended and with bare minimal support. The fences rotted and fell. The pastures were over grown and trees have taken over most of the land. The pond and stream are completely overgrown and inaccessible. The buildings that were all made by the family had grown old, and are in desperate need of repairs or completely needs to be torn down. We moved here in 2014 and decided to get the farm up and running again.
When Nathan and I moved in, we knew we needed to rebuild. We replaced the front part of the pastures with 5 strands of barb wire. Next, we made two separate pastures, rebuilt the holding pen so it could accommodate a new mother cow and calf, and a place for the veterinarian to care for the animals. We replaced the head gate, most of the pastures gates and man gates to access the animals. We added some cattle and chickens to the farm. Nathan and I knew we wanted to make the farm a real business. We knew we had something very special here. We researched many breeds of cattle. We visited several farms and talked to any farmer who was willing to talk and educate us on this journey.
In 2018, we picked our breed of cattle. Nathan and I went to a farm breeding Irish Dexters. The breed is the smallest cattle breed in Europe and we knew they were perfect for our 56 acres. With this breed, they need a half an acre per head for grazing and we have the space to keep quite a few. We sold some cattle that we raised or bought and purchased our first Dexter -cross.
Today we working on improving the breed with registered Dexters and we are members of the American Dexter Cattle Association (ADCA). We love learning everyday about farming and look forward to you business. Please feel free to contact us for any service we can assist with.
