✔️The Facts About Screwworm from the American Horse Council

The American Horse Council (AHC) is working to share critical information for horse owners regarding the current New World Screwworm (NWS) infestation recently announced in Texas.

On June 3, 2026, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed New World Screwworm in the umbilical area of a calf in Zavala County, Texas. This expansion into the United States is alarming and AHC wants to make sure you know about the potential risks of this parasitic fly to horses.

While this might seem like an overwhelming and scary situation, we’ve dealt with this before and have confidence in current science based strategies. The United States historically was afflicted with Screwworm for hundreds of years before successfully eliminating it from the country in the 1960s using many of the same methods we use now.

We’ve eliminated it before, and have full faith we’ll do it again, but only if all horse owners do their part to stay vigilant and follow state guidelines for animal movement.

The story of D-Day is usually told through the courage of soldiers, the thunder of tanks, and the vast armada that crossed the English Channel on June 6, 1944.

But there is another story that is rarely remembered.

The story of the horses.

By the time of the Normandy invasion, warfare had entered the mechanized age. Trucks, tanks, aircraft, and landing craft dominated the battlefield. Yet horses and mules still played a vital role behind the scenes, carrying supplies, ammunition, equipment, and provisions across terrain where vehicles often struggled to operate.

As Allied forces pushed inland through the hedgerows, muddy tracks, and damaged roads of Normandy, these dependable animals helped keep armies moving.

For thousands of years, horses had served alongside soldiers in almost every major conflict. They had carried cavalry into battle, hauled artillery, delivered messages, and transported supplies. D-Day and the Normandy campaign marked one of the final chapters in that long partnership.

They did not receive medals.

They did not tell their stories.

Yet they worked tirelessly in dangerous conditions, asking for nothing in return.

When we remember the heroes of Normandy, perhaps we should spare a thought for these forgotten equine companions who quietly played their part in one of history's most important moments.

Lest we forget them too.

Have you ever heard about the role horses played during World War II?

On this Memorial Day never forget those who gave their lives for our freedom. 🇺🇸
