Pumpkins and squash have male and female flowers. The insects (there are many besides honeybees) that pollinate them have to move the pollen from a male flower to a female flower. The male flowers bloom first make sure the pollinators are already visiting the plant when the female flowers are ready.

A neighbor called that there was a snapping turtle in the middle of the road in front of the house. So I get a shovel and move her off the road in the grass.

An hour later I go check if it moved and it was on the road again 🙄100 yards closer to the crick. So I get my shovel and put her right by the crick.

FYI this was probably a female. They lay eggs in fields, away from water, this time of year. She was probably returning to the crick after laying her eggs.

Even after many years of farming watching the miracle of putting seeds in the ground and seeing plants grow is humbling.
