Last year, I shared that I had made the decision to focus solely on peonies and created a new brand and online shop: House of Peonies. At the time, it may have seemed like a side project because, for Hayden Run Farms customers, not much changed right away. You still saw the same flower stand on Saturdays, the same website, and the same me behind it all.

But behind the scenes, a lot was shifting.
I quickly realized I couldn’t sustainably run two separate websites, and last November I moved my peony subscriptions over to House of Peonies. Around the same time, I had so many ideas for how to make buying flowers easier and create a better customer experience (the speed of my ideas is often much faster than the speed of my budget or ability to execute them).

Over the winter, many of those ideas started to take shape. I spent countless hours rebuilding the website to make shopping for local peonies more convenient, invested in professional guidance to refine the brand message, added better ways to stay connected through email, invested in a new flower cooler, and somehow all of that turned into a full rebrand for both local and nationwide peonies under one name: House of Peonies .co

Throwback to tulip season... 🌷Because right now my camera roll is lacking in tulip content and I am feeling a little left out 😅

But if you are in Central Ohio, don't worry, I've got you. There are plenty of beautiful, farm-fresh tulips out there right now.

Here are a few local spots to grab some this week:
🌷 (Marysville)
🌷 (Plain City)
🌷 (Columbus)
🌷 (Pickerington)
🌷 (Xenia)

Nothing says spring like a bunch of tulios on your table. Happy April!

I finally finished planting all my peony roots 🪏 220 total since December... about 100 just this past week.

Honestly? The perfect form of productive procrastination. Now... it is time time to face my taxes 😅and another computer task I have been delaying 💻 (sharing more soon).

Tell me, what's your current "productive procrastination" task?

It’s officially that time of year…
you went to Costco for groceries and somehow left with a peony 🌸

I get it, the deals are tempting and spring energy is real.

But before you fall in love with that potted peony, there are a few things you’ll want to know.

Saving this post now = future you with a garden full of blooms instead of regrets.

What are your recent Spring impulse buys? 👀

First day of spring 🌿

Yesterday was one of those days you just want to be outside. We spent it in the peony field planting more roots and getting things ready for the season ahead.

The coral peonies are already a few inches tall, while the rest are just starting to poke through the soil. It’s early, but everything is moving.

Being outside and working in the dirt this time of year just feels good. If you’ve been thinking about a new hobby, gardening might be it, and peonies are always worth it. They take patience, but once they’re established, they come back better every year.

Counting down the days…
✨ About 50 days until peony season in Central Ohio (last year our first blooms opened on May 10)

Is this your first spring with a peony about to bloom? 🌸

In honoer of Pi day. I did the math, of course!

We are always told to trim flower stems at a 45 degree angle to increase the surface area through which they absorb water. But… What is the actual increase in the surface area of the bottom of the stem if cut at a 45 degree angle? I know you are dying to know! Okay, maybe not… but it is Pi Day (3.14) so it seems fitting.

Cutting the stem at a 45 degree angle maximizes the area of the cross sectional ellipse. The area of this ellipse is 41% larger than the area of the cross sectional circle obtained by cutting the stem horizontally. A diagonal cut also prevents the stems to sitting flushed with the bottom of the vase (which can also difficult water absorption) 🤯

If you are a teacher, here is a real life word problem for your students. “A flower farmer wants to know if she/he should really care about cutting the flower stems at a 45 degree angle as recommended in the industry.” Some hints to the solution in the next picture 👉

In case you didn't know, I love Math! Anyone else? You can also tell me about your Calculus nightmares, I get it! 😅

I complained about winter more than usual this year, so it is only fair to come here and say how beautiful these spring days have been.

In just two days the grass is already looking greener and there are little signs of spring everywhere. It's amazing how quickly everything starts to wake up.
It feels like the season of fresh starts is finally here 💚

If you are planning to add peonies to your garden, timing matters 🌸

March is a good time to plant in many areas, and is often your last window before potted peonies become available in the spring.

Peonies were not sentimental for me at first.

Other flowers were. One of my childhood memories is watering the hydrangeas at my great-grandmother’s summer house in Argentina. I loved it so much that years later I planted a hydrangea hedge at the farm.

Peonies came later, when I started flower farming.

The first season our peonies bloomed happened to be the same spring my daughter graduated from high school. We decorated for her party with the few blooms we had. So now peonies will always mark that moment for me.

It’s never too late to start a new spring tradition in your own garden.

If you’ve been thinking about planting peonies, we still have a few colorful varieties available:

• Alexander Fleming
• Red Sarah Bernhardt
• Red Grace

We’re still shipping peony roots, and locals can also pick up at the farm.

Because missing fall planting doesn’t mean missing peonies. 🌸
