Fall Fest is almost here! Join us for an afternoon of food, music, creativity, and community at the farm!

Plus free food from Ro's Kitchen, tea making, crafts, watercolor painting, and plenty more! The Franklinton Branch of the Library will be doing crafts & Green Columbus will have a selection of trees to giveaway!

Do you have what it takes to be crowned the Franklinton Black Walnut Bake-Off Champion?

We're putting this beloved (and notoriously difficult to crack!) Ohio nut in the spotlight at our Fall Fest on October 17th!

Sweet, savory, traditional, experimental - if it's got black walnuts, it's in the running!

Want to compete but don't have any black walnuts? Let us know! We've been busy cracking them at our Sunday U-Forage events and may be able to help you get your hands on some.

Judging will take place at Fall Fest on October 17th, where one lucky baker will earn the title of Black Walnut Bake-Off Champion!

What have we been up to for the last few weeks?

We celebrated the birth of our dear Rural Action AmeriCorps Volunteer Elizabeth with some very enthusiastic office karaoke, kept cracking black walnuts at our first U-Forage events, and watched the first fresh ginger of the season make its way into weekly Harvest Packs.

We've supported various community partners run wonderful programs using our U-Pick & PK Learning Garden as spaces for learning and connection. We hosted two The Columbus Foundation Big Table events on Tuesday and always appreciate the reminder of how important it is to be with one another and to listen deeply.

Over 20 Serviceberries were planted in the U-Pick! A heartfelt thanks to the Giving Grove for helping support this project. We are thrilled that our neighbors will be able to share in the berry abundance next summer!

The sun chokes have started to bloom and the array of wildlife around an urban farm never ceases to amaze. The team continues preparing for fall fest and tend to our scattered sites but of course, there is always time to stop and pet a stray cat. 💚

A much-loved FF tradition has returned, and we’re so excited to celebrate with you.

🎨 Crafts, activities, and and and… so many more things!

Do you have a black walnut tree dropping ankle-breaking nuts all over your yard? Is there a tree along your daily walk? We are soliciting donations of black walnuts! Clean, hull-free nuts preferred, and we will do the cracking. Drop off outside 867 W Town St. from 8-4 Mon-Fri.

We will process the nuts for sharing at our Fall Fest on October 17th.

Not sure how to identify or harvest black walnuts? We have an explainer guide available in the event calendar on our website (link in comments). Join us at the U-Pick on Sundays in October to learn how to use our walnut-processing tools!

Ps- Please don’t drop them off on the weekend- they will be stolen by squirrels!

Snaps from this week at the farm!

It was a beautiful one in the fields, with lovely, abundant tomato tunnels full to the brim! Our Harvest Pack members got to take home a whole bunch of gorgeous heirloom tomatoes in their packs!

Our farmers market crew got rained out this weekend but the tomatoes we weren't able to distribute will be shared with various community partners, giving us another way to get this bounty into the hands of the people.

We also hosted a natural dye workshop with Bel! It was such a joy to spend the afternoon experimenting, and making beautiful things from plants. Thanks, Bel, for sharing your knowledge with us and helping us get to know each other a little more!

What’s growing in the U-Pick? A LOT!

The garden is changing every day, and there is always something new, but here’s a little snapshot of what you might find right now:

Okra - beautiful, prolific, and covered in gorgeous flowers.

Pole beans - green AND purple, feels like a little treasure hunt.

Mint + other herbs - a whole carpet of mint! Make tea, whip up a chutney, or message us and we’ll send you our best mint chicken recipe ever.

Tomatoes galore - eat them green, or try your luck at finding a ripe one. (They go FAST!)

Shish*to peppers - so yummy! Perfect for roasting.

Gomphrena - a beautiful cut flower that dries so beautifully, so you can enjoy it all year long.

Tomatillos, eggplant, sweet peppers - and plenty more.

We’ve also recently installed small sign in front of each bed to make navigating the U-Pick a little easier. Look for the green tie on its signwhich mean at least some of that row is ready to harvest!

A little note: plants don’t always ripen all at once, so a green tie doesn’t necessarily mean everything in the row is ready. Take a look, use your best judgment, and when in doubt, ask a farmer!
