🥃 Silverthorn Reserve | The Blender’s Art Series
Tonight’s pour is one that really puts the focus on something I’ve grown to appreciate more and more — the art of blending.
Silverthorn Reserve was created by co-founder and Master Blender Drew Thorn, who spent a decade helping build Sagamore Spirit before setting out to create something intentionally small. Silverthorn focuses on projects that simply wouldn’t make sense at a larger scale — single-barrel curation, custom finishing, and small blending projects typically involving just 2–10 barrels.
Their process is also pretty interesting. Every barrel goes through sensory analysis, and Silverthorn utilizes slow-blending and slow-proofing, allowing a blend to return to the barrels and “marinate” before bottling. Their wh***ey is also non-chill filtered with no added coloring or additives, and every bottle includes detailed composition information.
That brings us to this 10-Year, 115 Proof release from The Blender’s Art Series.
🥃 THE BLEND
▪️ 10% — 14-Year Georgia Wh***ey
▪️ 68% — 10-Year Kentucky Wh***ey
▪️ 22% — 10-Year Indiana Wh***ey
At 115 proof, this blend brings together wh***ey from three different states and lets Drew’s blending do the talking.
👃 NOSE: Maple • Vanilla
🥃 PALATE: Brown Sugar • Caramel • Rye
🔥 FINISH: Medium • Light Oak • Rye
For me, the sweeter maple, vanilla, brown sugar and caramel notes lead the way before the rye starts working its way in. The finish doesn’t overstay its welcome, bringing some light oak and rye spice to close things out.
This is a cool example of why you shouldn’t overlook the blender when talking about the people behind a great wh***ey. Sometimes the individual barrels are only part of the story — what someone can create by bringing them together is where things get really interesting.
Have you had anything from Silverthorn Reserve yet? And when it comes to wh***ey, are you reaching for a great single barrel or a carefully constructed blend?
🥃 Hunt. Review. Share.
Thank you Silverthorn Reserve and Nino Marchetti for the opportunity
