Well, if you build it, they will come LOL. About 10 years ago I brought my pony *Joey home. He was supposed to only be here temporarily as he came with another Curly filly who I had purchased and the seller insisted that I take him too, or no deal LOL. As you all know, the rest is history 🙂
*Joey was a feral 4 year old stallion who I planned to geld, halter-break and sell. But upon meeting him I realized that yes, he was a stallion, but he also had a heart of gold and I fell for him hard. I halter broke him and decided that there was "no" way I could part with him so over the years I purchased a few small mares for him and they had a few foals - but I really didn't want to have small ponies so I decided to breed him to my mare *Serenade (she was cooperative two years in a row on a steep embankment LOL). The resulting foals, Jaunty (now long yearling) and *Jude, 2024 c**t (including one photo of him) are amazing so I decided to train *Joey to collect so I could AI him to my full size mares It was a hilarious undertaking involving 3 people, several mares, some cooperative some not and basically us teaching *Joey that it was worth it to "work" with us.
So he is bred to 2 full size mares for 2025, pretty excited about that - but in the meantime..... I have been telling my kids for the past 10 years that "I bought a pony", suggesting that grandkids would be a great plan..... for the pony......!
Yesterday, my building of a good pony and *Joey's outstanding disposition, and my now 7 month old grandson all came together! First I drove *Joey for some company who wanted a ride in the carriage, then I put *Joey's little saddle on and he had his first ever rider, my grandson, Gabe! *Joey has been leadline trained for years, but no one wanted to put their kids on the "stallion". I am so stoked, Gabe seemed to like it and I hope he and *Joey can build their confidence together. *Joey will be 15 in the spring, so the timing and age will be about right in a few years. Ride on my boys!
