There’s smoke hanging over Crosswind Ranch today.
It’s easy to look at it as haze in the sky. But that smoke has a name.
The Ross Fire.
About 80,000 acres have burned in Palo Pinto and Jack Counties — much of it ranch country. Homes and structures have been lost. Cattle and horses have been moved. Firefighters and neighbors have spent nights trying to save what they could.
And a hundred miles away, some of that country is hanging in the air over ours.
That’s one of the things about living out here.
A fence may tell you where your ranch ends, but wind, drought, fire and rain don’t pay much attention to fences.
Today we’re smelling somebody else’s bad day.
Keep the firefighters, ranchers, families and livestock in the path of the Ross Fire in your prayers.
And around here, be damn careful with a spark.
