When the extraordinary becomes ordinary.

There’s something interesting that happens when you live in a beautiful place long enough.

You stop noticing just how beautiful it is.

The sunrise becomes another sunrise. The cattle grazing in the pasture become part of the scenery. The quiet becomes something you take for granted.

What once took your breath away eventually becomes just another Tuesday.

Elle and I have spent years building Crosswind Ranch. And somewhere along the way, the extraordinary became our ordinary.

But then something wonderful happens.

Guests arrive.

They stop to photograph a sunrise we’ve seen a thousand times. They marvel at the animals we feed every morning. They sit beneath an oak tree, listen to the wind, and find something in the silence that they didn’t even realize they’d been missing.

And through their eyes, we get to see our home again for the first time.

This morning, Wendy, who originally came to us as a Harvest Hosts guest and has since become part of our ranch family, sent me pictures of the sunrise.

I told her to hold on to that feeling for as long as she possibly could.

Because after you’ve watched that same sunrise for twenty years, it’s easy to forget that someone else would give just about anything to wake up to it.

I’ve come to think of Crosswind Ranch as a lighthouse.

Not a destination that tells people where they should go, but a place where they can slow down, get their bearings, remember what’s important, and chart their own course forward.

And here’s something we’re learning.

A lighthouse needs people looking back at it, too.

Every guest who shares a photograph, tells us how peaceful it is here, or simply sits quietly taking it all in reminds us of something we might otherwise overlook.

You help us appreciate the life we’ve built.

You remind us that the ordinary things we do every day are sometimes the very things other people are searching for.

So, to everyone who has stayed with us, walked our pastures, shared a meal, watched a sunset, or simply spent a quiet night beneath our Texas sky:

Thank you.

You may have come here to get away from your everyday life.

But in ways you probably don’t realize, you’ve helped us reconnect with ours.

And we are grateful.

We can do that in spades.

Heck, we’ve got so much grass, we’ll even let you touch the new grass. 🌱

We have been asked, many times, what we know about illegal antibiotics, in Argentina imported beef.

There is evidence to support this, but we do not know.

What we do know…. We do not use ANY antibiotics, ever.

There’s smoke hanging over Crosswind Ranch today.

It’s easy to look at it as haze in the sky. But that smoke has a name.

The Ross Fire.

About 80,000 acres have burned in Palo Pinto and Jack Counties — much of it ranch country. Homes and structures have been lost. Cattle and horses have been moved. Firefighters and neighbors have spent nights trying to save what they could.

And a hundred miles away, some of that country is hanging in the air over ours.

That’s one of the things about living out here.

A fence may tell you where your ranch ends, but wind, drought, fire and rain don’t pay much attention to fences.

Today we’re smelling somebody else’s bad day.

Keep the firefighters, ranchers, families and livestock in the path of the Ross Fire in your prayers.

And around here, be damn careful with a spark.
