It works on plans, meetings, awkward situations, and anything that suddenly feels unnecessary.

The cows don’t care about your excuses, but they’re the best one you’ve got.

Behind the scenes ranch life is a lot of this: always something that needs fixing, improving, or maintaining. It’s not always glamorous, but it’s what keeps everything running right for the cattle.

Can we just go back to when “AI” meant early mornings in the barn, handwritten breeding notes, and conversations about cattle genetics, breeding programs, and building better herds for the next generation instead of algorithms and fake content? 🐂

Funny how one acronym can mean two completely different worlds. Around here, AI will always be artificial insemination first. 🤠

They weren’t much help.

What looks like a bull “making a face” is actually one of the most important behaviors in cattle reproduction.

That’s called the Flehmen response, and it happens when a bull picks up chemical signals, called pheromones, from a cow, usually in urine or reproductive fluids.

Instead of relying only on his nose, he curls his upper lip and holds his head up to draw those scents into the vomeronasal organ (Jacobson’s organ) in the roof of his mouth. This specialized system allows him to detect whether a cow is in heat and ready to breed.

It may look funny, but it’s really just biology doing its job.

At Iron Pin Ranch, we believe the best way to understand a cattle program is to see it firsthand.

We’re always happy to welcome cattlemen and women to the ranch, give tours, talk genetics, and share the vision behind our Angus operation. If you’d like to visit, our gates are always open. Reach out anytime to schedule a tour. Email Gary at [email protected]
