We had our hand at crafting our own chopsticks. We selected the wood we wanted to work with. I chose teak, which represents resilience & grace, which I love. Our guide Franz was a huge help and so encouraging. Working with our hands was rewarding and we will cherish this memorable souvenir. We especially liked how we could personalize our chopsticks. I carved my name and Kyoto in Japanese in mine with a Sakura flower. 🌸

After dominating the art of eating with chopsticks, we couldn’t leave Japan without crafting our own. From selecting the wood, to carving, personalizing the engraving, to finding the cutest chopstick rests, we had a blast doing this activity. It’s a must-do when you’re planning your trip to Kyoto! 🥢🥋🍱🍣

A highlight of our trip to Kyoto was a morning meditation session with a Monk in his temple. The setting was very peaceful and as soon as we settled in you could feel the pace of life slow down. Our Monk took his time, explaining meditation and began with a matcha tea ceremony. We were given a sugar candy and rice cracker to prep our palate for the matcha tea. Matcha promotes heart health, boosts metabolism, aids in weight management, improves focus, fights free radicals, and supports liver function. I don’t know about you, but that is an easy yes!

When ‘A Happy Pancake’, one of the most coveted pancake restaurants in Tokyo has a wait list hours long, we got clever and ordered our soufflé pancakes via carryout to jump the line, and to continue our adventures. Thank you Starbucks, Ginza for letting us dine in your beautiful location with a spectacular view of the city. You always deliver in every country. ☕️

Today, isn’t about us eating, but feeding the deer at Deer Park outside of Todashi Temple. We bought rice crackers and little did we know what the deer would do for these things. Had to Sumo while in Tokyo! We were treated to a traditional Sumo dinner called, Chanko Nabe. It is a nutrient-dense, protein-rich hot pot designed to build strength and weight for the wrestlers. Did you know that Sumo wrestlers eat 10,000 calories per day!?! They also earn a very healthy income, and are professional athlete status, here in Japan. The brut force these athletes have is insane! Great show, lots of fun and excitement! We’re loving the culture.

If you can find it, Gyukatsu Motomura Harajuku is a must try. It’s a Iykyk, kind of place. Tucked underground in the tiniest footprint, you order before you step foot inside. There are four tables and bar seating. Prepare to get cozy and to have a great meal. Wagyu beef cutlet is served with a variety of sides, and you place the slice of beef on a tea light lit hot plate. We felt like we were having a chefs table experience being bellied up to the kitchen. There’s not many decisions to make when ordering, 1. How much beef do you want, and 2. what would you like to drink? The interactive cooking with the hot plate made for entertaining conversation and a full belly. We were happy to have gotten there early, as the line was backed up when we left. Feeling lucky to have found this hidden gem.
