🐴 The Hoof Tells a Story.

This is one of the best visuals I’ve found for understanding/visualizing loading and weight distribution—and this is only ONE component of what I look at when I evaluate a hoof.

Every hoof leaves clues.

The way a horse loads, unloads, compensates, and moves through the limb can eventually show up in the hoof capsule. Distortion, wear patterns, imbalance, heel placement, sole depth, frog position—none of these should be viewed in isolation.

The hoof is communicating.

Our job is to be willing to listen.

I don’t believe in trimming a hoof simply to make it look balanced. I want to understand why it looks the way it does and what the rest of the limb is telling me.

Because sometimes the most important thing you can see in a hoof…
is what it’s trying to tell you about the horse above it.

The hoof doesn’t lie. But you have to know how to read what it’s telling you.

✨ Every animal teaches me something different. Some need confidence. Some need consistency. Some need gentle boundaries. Others just need someone willing to listen before asking.

That part of hoofcare isn’t measured in minutes or inches of hoof removed. It’s measured in patience.

The long days, sore hands, and worn muscles have never been what define this career for me. The privilege of earning an animal’s trust is.

Because when trust is built between the farrier and the patient, a stronger relationship naturally grows between the farrier and the owner. That’s where real progress begins. That’s where lasting soundness has a chance to take root.

Every appointment is another opportunity to leave them a little more comfortable, a little more confident, and a little more trusting than they were before.

That’s the kind of foundation I want my work to stand on.

The first appointment? Absolute rodeo.
They pulled every trick they knew—spooking, resisting, testing every boundary. But behavior is communication, and I wasn’t there to “win.” I was there to listen.

Trust isn’t built by force. It’s built through consistency, patience, and showing them they’re safe.

Today was appointment number two. These boys stood like absolute gentlemen. No rodeo. No fear. Just two horses that understood what was being asked of them, and a farrier who understood what they needed.

Their mama got to see what I’ve believed all along: they were never “bad boys.” They were horses carrying past experiences into a new one.

Hoof care isn’t just about trimming feet. Sometimes it’s about rebuilding confidence—one appointment at a time. And days like today are exactly why I love what I do. 🤍

✨ Corrective trimming shouldn’t be a scary phrase. It should be a conversation about restoring function.

When a horse’s anatomy falls out of alignment, the hoof doesn’t just change—it forces the rest of the body to compensate. Those compensations may keep a horse moving for a while, but they rarely keep them comfortable.

This retired barrel horse has spent the last 7 months on a hoofcare journey focused on biomechanics, not shortcuts. Each trim was made with the goal of improving balance, supporting healthy loading, and allowing the horse to use its body the way it was designed to.

The result? A horse that’s back to running, playing in the pasture, and living sound and comfortably in retirement.

Progress takes consistency. Biomechanics matter. And horses deserve hoofcare that works with their anatomy—not against it. ✨

Reliability shouldn’t be a rarity in the equine industry.

Being dependable isn’t an extra service—it’s a commitment. At Downda Earth Hoofcare, showing up when I say I will, communicating clearly, and respecting both your time and your animal’s time are values I take seriously.

🤎 A second look changed everything 🤎

This is the same horse that was given a prognosis of degenerative navicular disease.

Just five months later, the picture looks very different.

What initially appeared to be an irreversible condition has proven to be the result of improper hoof balance and trimming.

Cases like this are a reminder that a diagnosis is only as valuable as the foundation it’s built on, and sometimes that foundation deserves a second look.

Vacation mode: OFF. ☀️➡️🐴

I’m excited to get back to doing what I love and serving my clients again! Here are just a few of my May patients for tax. From horses and donkeys to the many other animals I’m fortunate enough to work with, every appointment is an opportunity to make a difference.

May brought progress, trust, challenges, and plenty of rewarding moments. As we head into June, I’m feeling optimistic about what’s ahead while staying realistic about the work it takes to help each animal reach its potential.

Here’s to another month of healthy feet, happy animals, and continued growth. If your animals are due for care, my schedule is open and I’d love to help.

Not every horse needs force.
Some just need someone willing to listen long enough to earn the answer.

Today’s client started out nervous, backing away, kicking out, and unsure of my intentions. We only got the fronts done, and that’s okay! Because by the end of the appointment, the same horse that was bracing against me was relaxing into stretches, releasing tension through his neck and face, and finally letting go enough to trust the process.

A “problem horse” is often just a horse that remembers.

Hoof care isn’t always about getting it done fast. Sometimes it’s about slowing down enough to work with the horse instead of against them.

If today was any indication, I’m excited to see where the next visit takes us — hopefully tackling those hind feet with the same trust. 🤎

🤎 Second visit, and this donkey stood perfect - even on a hoof that’s been abscessing.

That matters.

Because animals don’t fake it. They don’t stand quietly for something that hurts unless they trust what’s happening in that moment.

No force. No shortcuts. No “just get it done.”
Just reading the animal, working with them, and earning that stillness.

Progress isn’t always loud. Sometimes it looks like a hoof picked up without a fight and a donkey that knows it’s not about to be put through something unfair.

That’s the standard I hold myself to every time I show up.
