Exciting announcements coming soon! Especially for our NoVA, RVA, and East Coast friends and family.

If you haven’t already, we sincerely ask you to share our farm info with all your friends! We want to make as big a splash as we can in our little pond in the coming weeks.

We’ll tease you all now with the fact we’re fully stocked with all our meat cuts and flavors again - including bacon!

In the meantime, the Carneys are going to rest for the next couple days. The last two weeks have been a blur and we’ve all been rewarded with head colds. Our kitty, Slippers, has the right idea today.

Have you ever wondered why we call the meat on our plate 'beef' but the animal it comes from a 'cow'? The answer goes back to a major historical event in 1066 AD.

That year, the Normans, led by William the Conqueror, invaded England. This established a new ruling class that spoke French, while the common people continued to speak Old English.

This created a peculiar linguistic divide that we still see in our language today, especially at the dinner table. 👑

The French-speaking nobles would order their food using French words. So, the meat from a cow, or 'boeuf' in French, became 'beef'.

Meanwhile, the Anglo-Saxon peasants who actually raised the animals continued to use the Old English words for them. They tended to the 'cu' (cow) in the field.

This pattern repeated for other animals. The English 'pig' became French 'porc' (pork) on the plate, and 'sheep' became 'mouton' (mutton).

The words we use for meat often come from the language of the conquerors, while the words for the live animals come from the language of the farmers. 🐄

It's a lasting reminder of how a single battle nearly a thousand years ago shaped the very words we use for our food today.

We want to give a shout out to Kerri about her wonderful new children’s book on Alpha-Gal! While those who develop Alpha-Gal Syndrome are not able to enjoy the products Carney Farms sells, we have many customers that are related or married to someone with Alpha-Gal and this book is a wonderful educational piece. It’s also exciting to be able to support a local Virginian author 📖💕 Way to go Kerri!
